Guesthouse Umenoya was a pleasant surprise! I got off the bus at Marine Town in Wajima and was able to walk a short distance to the guesthouse. The room was minimalist with a raised tatami platform for the futon. The room size was great for me as I am only 152 centimeters. If you are very tall it might be a very tight fit. Down the hall from my room were the shared bath and shower, immaculately clean with showering amenities. There were also a bonus tickets (one for each night of my stay) for a sento bath house a 10 minute walk away. That was great! I had a lot of fun with all the Obaasan (grandmothers). Highly recommended for a great cultural experience! The guesthouse was beautifully restored and renovated, and offered a large common-room that was set up for work/internet/meetings, also in the common room there tea, coffee, a refrigerator and microwave. There is a ramen restaurant in the front of the guesthouse. I wasn't able to try the ramen there (it was all pork based, and I don't eat pork) but they had a small chicken dish karaage which was very tasty. There are konbini around, but none are very close by. The Juzo Shrine was across the street, and I was able to get my Goshuin-cho stamped. Walking through the shrine garden will take you to the Market street, where the Morning Market is a 1,000 year old Wajima tradition. Speaking some basic Japanese will help you, but the Hostess was very adept at using translation app on her phone. I enjoyed my stay VERY much!

The place feels fresh after recent renovations. We had never experienced an Onsen, and in fact didn’t realise we were booking an all inclusive holiday at an Onsen hotel. But it was a cultural immersion experience like no other. We lived a tiny slice of an integral part of Japanese culture that Westerners don’t usually experience, and we felt both welcomed and privileged. It was brilliant.

The host was kind and welcoming. We were just a walk away from the beach and could watch the sunset. The beds were comfortable.
