    The town is an old outpost on the fantastic San Francisco...

    The town is an old outpost on the fantastic San Francisco river. It was transformed by the construction of a large dam and creation of a reservoir on the river. This displaced the long settled farm population and introduced tourism and wealthy residents interested in vacation resorts and luxury housing. Even though these changes date from the sixties, they have not fully taken over, thankfully. There are many signs of simpler times still, including dirt roads, cattle grazing, abandoned condominium projects and the lovely course of the river water allowed to flow from the reservoir. Avoid the pizza; it’s overpriced and not tasty, especially at Penus. The municipal beach and campground is a nice place to visit. The food prices and services are very reasonable.

    We stayed in a beautiful chalet, very clean, quiet and in the middle of nature. Well maintained, everything worked well! The caring and sympathetic owners made a delicious fresh breakfast every day and dinner was also excellent: Regina is a great cook who has won several awards. We would love to come back here.
