Cosy Gem At the Foot of Matterhorn
A beautiful car-free village in the Swiss Alps, Zermatt is world-famous for its skiing and mountaineering qualities. Standing in the shadow of the impressive Matterhorn, this is a true Alpine paradise, popular with both celebrities and citizens of all nationalities.
Surrounded by stunning mountains and plenty of hiking trails, Zermatt offers more than just pretty views. The nearby Sunnegga Paradise ski area needs to be accessed by 3 successive means of transport: a funicular railway, a gondola and a cable car, making it a great ride with an even better finish! And in Zermatt, there is still even more!
This lovely village is a great base for hiking on the nearby Breithorn, the easiest trek of the entire Alps, rewarding the effort with a great panorama of the snow-covered mountain tops and charming villages below.

Unless you are a dedicated hiker we think one and half to two days is enough time to spend there. We had already been up four mountain peaks in Switzerland so we were more interested in the area than going up another peak. Great little village with no cars, only small electric vehicles. Great food, good shopping and stunning views of then Matterhorn. Nice to walk the streets with no worry of traffic. There was a small group of older local musicians dressed in traditional clothing who played at a location and then moved on to another location to play. Unfortunately there was heavy cloud cover the two days I was there and didn’t see the Matterhorn at all. Web cams at top showed nothing so didn’t go up. Gornergrat trip was worthwhile and good views of everything except the Matterhorn.i enjoyed walking round the old town. We had exceptional weather 26 degrees and no clouds, so the Gornergrat is a MUST DO in these conditions. Even paragliding should be considered. The town isn't big, so a good walk around is a great introduction, beware of the electric bikes as you walk down the high street ! Stunning alpine village. Definitely add Zermatt to your list when visiting Switzerland. We could definitely have spent more time enjoying Zermatt and surrounds. We were very happy with our choice of accommodation. Hotel Walliserhof is good value for the area compared to many other hotels. It is also right next to some of the most amazing hiking trails in Zermatt. The hotel is slightly far away from the center of Zermatt, but you can easily take the bus or it's a 15 minute walk. The best feature was the view from the balcony on the top floor, really stunning. The beds were comfy and we slept well. Zermatt town is great as is the skiing and the hotel is perfectly positioned for the Sunnegga ski lifts. Breakfast was decent value given the high prices in Zermatt.
