Everything! The food was delicious and Charlie organised a few tours for us while we were there. The family was really nice and made us feel very welcome. The fan in the room was especially great for the heat in the amazon. The shower was great as well!

This is an absolutely amazing place to stay and Andres and his family are the nicest people ever! They welcome you with fresh juice after your jungle walks and always ofger some cold water to refill your bottle. I booked one night, ended up extending my stay and I really want to go back there soon! The room is simple but really comfortable. Mosquito net is well tucked under the mattress so you don’t need to worry about any bugs. Food is absolutely delicious and portions are big (I don’t eat meat and the variety of plates was amazing). There is a really good wifi (in the morning from 7 am until mid-day I think, and in the evening from 5 pm until 10 pm - electricity runs at the same schedule). I LOVED the day jungle walk with Carlos and all the conversations with Andres’s dad. I also did a night walk and basket weaving workshop - both of them were really interesting. Staying with a local family is such a nice way to visit Amazonas and explore the jungle! You can learn a lot and above all - you are getting your info from people who have grown up in the forest and know everything about it. It’s also nice to know that your money stays directly in the community. To get there you can either take a boat from Puerto Nariño to Bocas de Amacayacu (25 000 cop) or take a boat from Leticia and get off at Bocas. Then Andres can pick you up in his boat and take you up the river to San Martin community (35 000 cop one way). Don’t stress about the return trip - they will help you making a reservation for a Leticia bound boat. Everything is cash only and all the walks and workshops are 60-80 000 cop each. You can also rent rubber boots here (I paid 10 000 cop for my entire stay). You need to pay 10 000 cop for entering the community. There is a little shop just in front of the hostel.

I was impressed with my room, it offered a sizeable double bed and the accomodation itself overlooked the Amazon river. where you can admire the sunrise and sunset. The staff were super helpful & friendly. The Maloka in the center of the accommodation offered the perfect space to browse the handmade artesanias, as well as enjoy a meal and meet local people and travellers alike. I would go back in a heartbeat.

From the moment we were greeted at the riverside by our host upon arrival, until the moment we left, we have been treated with kindness and warmth by our host, his family and the wider community. You see that the community is keen to have tourists stay in Macedonia such that they can then use the funds to progress their community projects. For this reason alone I’d recommend this as a base from which to explore the Amazon rather than staying in Leticia. Sure you could get on a group tour from Leticia which herds you quickly through the various communities on the river but you’d be missing out on so much and only a small portion of your funds would be directly helping this community. Lie back in a hammock, listen to the forest and escape the bustle of everyday life. Highly recommend the tours they run. No agencies are involved, our host just gets the locals with the relevant expertise to conduct the tour / activity. There were only ever the 2 of us on any given tour / activity and we did many of them including night walk, animal sanctuaries, fishing, visit to see the sloths, way of life experience etc so you really are getting the personal touch. Our host provided boots for the muddier walks, good binoculars when needed and flashlights. If you are here on a weekend make sure you are around one of the afternoons to watch the community football and volleyball - Great fun. The heat and mosquitos were no way near as bad as we were expecting but we did take the standard recommended precautions (hats, long sleeves, mosi repellant etc). The meals are expertly prepared and delicious. Recommend to bring good earplugs, roosters wake up early! Muchas Gracias!!!!

Amazing little town in the jungle.

Amazing little town in the jungle. Get out of Leticia asap and stay there. There are no cars or motorcycles. Only foot traffic on perfectly paved paths. The people are unbelievably friendly, and it’s the cleanest town I’ve ever been to. Like Switzerland clean

July 2022. A special place. Great relaxed vibe.

July 2022. A special place. Great relaxed vibe. Locals friendly. Very safe to walk around. I’d recommend 3-4 nights to get full experience. Lots of cheap hostel options. We stayed at Refugio Maiku - recommended, but one the pricier options (US$25/day for a private room with b/r). A handful of options to eat. Most restaurants are clustered in one area. Margarita is biggest and has a good lunch buffet (US$5). Dona Luz and Rogelio (cheapest) are also recommended. At night, there is a parrilla in the street where you can get cheap eats. There are a couple of basic grocery stores facing the river where you get water, beer and other essentials. One is open until 11pm. Most tours (“actividades”) you’ll want a guide. Depending on the water level, the tours are very different. I’d recommend a night hike the first day you arrive. Tarapoto is a must. The trip to San Antonio reserva on the Peruvian side and hike to a ginormous tree is also beautiful. We didn’t have time to go, but heard great things about the hike in Parque Natural Amacayacu. Each tour we did was between $12 -$25 but can vary based on group size. When you arrive, you can go to the information booth and get a map and information on tours. You can walk on your own to the Wochine reservation on your own (25 minutes) and see the pirarucu and caimans. You can also walk to Altos de Aguila and see monkeys and parrots (15-20 minutes) Lots of people will offer to be your guide, but best to find someone recommended beforehand or to ask at your hostel. Brandon was our guide for a few tours and is recommended. Tickets for the ferry back to Leticia is behind the malecon. You can reserve a place the day before you travel.
