FAQs about hotels in Bayeux

Rich History and Medieval Beauty

Bayeux is a medieval French town in the region of Lower Normandy, known for the 11th-century Bayeux Tapestry which depicts scenes from the conquest of England by William the Conquerer in 1066. Registered by UNESCO as ‘Memory of the World’, this historic tapestry is 70 metres long and gives us information about the way of life in the Middle Ages.

The Norman-Romanesque Notre Dame Cathedral has impressive stained glass windows, bas-relief sculptures and a crypt with 15th-century frescoes beneath its floor. Consecrated in 1077, this structure is the place where the Bayeux Tapestry was kept for about seven centuries.

Opened in 1864, the botanical garden of Bayeux, which is home to the popular Weeping Beech tree and about 400 more trees, is open daily for free. You can wander around the picturesque old part of the city or visit the vibrant city centre with the modern shops and restaurants.

Crossed by the Aure River and situated on the train route to Paris, Bayeux is 7 km from the coast of the English Channel and 20 km from Caen – Carpiquet Airport. Booking.com will help you find the right hotel, guest house or apartment in Bayeux and the city of Caen.

The cathedral is so beautiful as is the whole town.

The cathedral is so beautiful as is the whole town. It truly is postcard perfect. We loved the Battle of Normandy museum and learned so much about the WWII history of the town. The military cemetery and memorial to journalists are both well worth visiting. And we also did a half day D Day tour which was very good. And it was only two hours by train from Mont St Michel which is the most incredible place.

The Cathedral is on pair with Notre dame. we spent several hours gazing at the windows and gargoyles. Bayeux is a quaint beautiful town. Great place to stay while exploring DDay beaches. We were sorry that we did not stay longer.

Beautiful town, great location to take a trip to Normandy beaches. The tapestries were moved to the UK and the Tapestry museum closed on Sept 1st for two years! Most restaurants were closed on Sunday and Monday and you definitely need a reservation for dinner if you want a good meal. some restaurants were closed on Tuesday too! If you take a full day tour of Normandy I would suggest staying the night at Bayeux because there is traffic at the end of the day heading back to Paris.

Bayeux is a lovely, well-maintained, safe and easily walkable town. We used it as a base for three full-day tours to the Normandy beaches and Mont Saint-Michel, so we only had time to explore the Cathedral on our own. Unfortunately, the Bayeux Tapestry had been temporarily removed by the time we arrived, so we did not get to visit that. It is advisable to make restaurant reservations if there are ones you do not want to miss, but seeing the sites was more of our priority. We were willing to eat around 6:30 or 7:00 and we did not have any problem finding a satisfactory meal.

Bayeux is a small town, but is centrally located to get to Mont St Michael and D-Day activities. Not much to do in the town itself. There was one highlight in the town itself and that was the restaurant La Rapiere. We had a great dining experience there.

Upon entering Bayeux we were stunned by the beauty of the Cathedral. The town itself was lovely and we enjoyed the markets. We were sad not to be able to see the Bayeux tapestry as it was being restored. No worries, we will just return in two years time. Of course, WWII had a huge impact on Normandy and Bayeux. We visited the landing beaches easily from Bayeux and the war museum at Bayeux is not to be missed. The largest second world war cemetery is to be found in Bayeux also.

Host was very communicative and helpful. The gite, even though small, is well appointed. It is right in town, walking distance to restaurants and stores. It is only about 30 minutes away from the WWII Normandy D-Day beaches, which was the main reason for our visit. It is also close to the Bayeux Tapestry, but unfortunately it is currently closed as the museum is being rebuilt and the tapestry is being restored.

The bedroom was so spacious and comfortable and the bathroom was very clean. A continental breakfast was served each morning and was delicious. We had our own private dining area and were able to look out at the property's beautiful garden while we ate. The location of this property was ideal as we used it as a base to explore Normandy. It is also perfectly located to explore the town of Bayeux.

Breakfast in the mornings was lovely and Christine was a lovely hostess. Our room was large and spacious for a twin room and was welcomed as we had a lot of motorcycle luggage. The location was super and only a 20 minute walk to Bayeux town centre and the restaurants with loads of choice. A wonderful stay at a lovely property and city full of history.
