Durham could definitely be one of those towns that appear in fairy tales and stories of kings and knights. Lying on a hilled peninsula formed by the Wear River, the striking cathedral overlooks from the hilltop, surrounded by the castle, palaces and historic buildings. Durham is most beautiful city in the UK Cathedral is the best in UK and its free to enter Guided tour of the castle (£7.50) and going up the cathedral tower (£10) are well worth doing Walking by the river is also recommended. Durham City was a great place to visit.
Durham City was a great place to visit. You can spend half a day in the Cathedral, the rest of the time wandering around the city and river, stopping to eat and drink in the great pubs. If you want to get further afield, drive to Beamish Museum, go up onto the Pennines, Visit Kielder Forest, go the coast (Lindisfarne is worth a visit), Whitby isn't that far away and the drive over the moors is great.Guest review byKelliganUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Much of the city is geared towards students but we found at...
Much of the city is geared towards students but we found at least two good restaurants - the Turkish one and the Italian above it. Beamish was well worth the visit. The first day, we could not gain access to the cathedral because it was matriculation day for the university - but well worth going the second day. We loved Durham but the Townhouse -the property we booked...
We loved Durham but the Townhouse -the property we booked and paid for through booking.com had shut down. So this was a very stressful start to our stay. We had to find and pay for alternative accommodation out of town as all hotels were booked.
