This place is absolutely amazing! We were there with a 2yo but I highly recommend it for a romantic getaway😍 Grounds are nice, castle beautiful, room very stylish, staff amazing, restaurant very good etc etc. Hexham is just a short drive away and so are some nice tourist attractions. Only sad thing abt the whole experience was leaving the hotel🤗

Absolutely loved the place. While in the country it was not far from attractions, especially the Roman ones. We had a great evening meal when we arrived, staff were so friendly and made us so comfortable. Morning cooked breakfast was also fantastic. Great place to stay

This hotel has mixed reviews and I was a bit nervous when booking there 3 nights. But we loved it. The location is stunning directly by the river Tyne (which is the blackest river I ever have seen, by the way. Fascinating...). The hotel sits in a very beautiful and well kept garden and has nice seats outside. If (!) the weather allows, sitting in the garden is gorgeous (looking onto the river and the very old bridge). The middle part of the hotel is an old inn - as I understood from the 18th century. Loved this vibe. In walking distance is the beautiful village as well as a path by the river. Surrounded by picturesque landscape. Food was very good (diner and breakfast). Nice wines. Very cosy dining room and very cosy bar. Cannot praise the bar keeper enough. He was a really charming and cheerful person - his name starts with an "H" (unfortunately cannot remember more). Please keep him, he is the best! It is easy to visit Hadrian's Wall and Hexham from here. The whole area is fascinating and beautiful - a lot of history. Absolutely loved Hexham cathedral, by the way. Our room was basic, but with a lovely view to the river and a quite modern bathroom. Cannot complain. It was at the end of the garden in the annex. Would recommend that room. (Check carefully which room you book. I think they are different, especially the bath rooms).

Hexham itself is a lovely little town with some nice walks...

Hexham itself is a lovely little town with some nice walks and interesting architecture. There are plenty of options for food and we opted for Stalida, a greek restaurant, which was very good. We stayed near Hexham to explore Hadrian's wall so I thoroughly recommend visiting Vindolanda - you gain access to the main site and a Roman museum for a good price (can do both over 2 days with the saver ticket). Chesters Roman fort is also worth a visit, especially if you are a member of English Heritage as it's then free! It's worth walking along some of the wall and we found it was easy to do this from Housesteads - it's a pleasant walk from there to the old Sycamore Gap, minus a tree now of course. Bellingham waterfall at Hareshaw Linn is also a great walk, the waterfall was larger and more spectacular than we expected.

Hexham is a beautiful market town, a place where people live and work - not touristy but with everything a tourist might want e.g. cafes, restaurants, arts events, a cinema. Great public transport connections to Newcastle and Carlisle. Exceptional countryside - Hadrian's Wall of course, but don't forget the North Pennines for remote wild walks.

Good facilities to buy most items for daily touring but car...

Good facilities to buy most items for daily touring but car parking is an issue until you work out their system which does have overnight parking in a separate part of a general car park. The township has a railway station, a large Tesco and Aldi. There is a an ancient church and other buildings which are interesting for those interested in history of this region.

Beautiful town on the train line from Newcastle to Carlisle.

Beautiful town on the train line from Newcastle to Carlisle. Would recommend for short or longer stays due to the amenities and infrastructure, as well as plenty of great local establishments to dine at, and the supermarkets for longer stay shopping. Taxis service trips to nearby towns like Acomb for as little as £7, and the town itself is easily walkable. Would recommend as a base for exploring Hadrians wall sites as the AD122 bus route services the main sites every 2 hours for £6 bus ticket for the day, hop on hop off. Lovely locals in the pubs were keen to chat to us when they heard our New Zealand accents and we felt so welcome.

The Abbey and Goal are well worth a visit. There are plenty of coffee shops and interesting local shops, not to mention the market on Tuesdays and Saturdays. It is also an ideal base from which to explore the Roman remains and wall

Dinner was exceptional! Souffle's to die for and the Waygu steak was simply delicious!! Would highly recommend. Breakfast was fantastic as well with fresh juices, croissants and a delicious cooked selection. The hotel has a wonderful buzzy atmosphere - clearly a very popular place for locals as well as visitors. The staff were all very friendly, helpful and looked after us extremely well - nothing was too much trouble. Surprisingly quiet spot in the centre of Hexham with lovely views over park.

We were in the self-catering cottage. The property was clean and well-equipped. Could have done with instructions for the oven but we eventually got the hang of it. We loved the proximity of the animals and the freedom to roam the farmyards, and Northumberland is lovely in the Autumn. You're within a short drive of Hexham and Corbridge, which are both worth a visit. You're also not far from Hadrian's Wall. Also, The Rose and Crown in Slaley serves lovely food and has a great atmosphere.
