Whitby is famous for its connection to Dracula, the story being that Bram Stoker was inspired by seeing a coffin being taken up the 199 stairs to St Mary's Church and Whitby Abbey. It is a lovely town with many small shops on both sides of the harbour. St Mary's is a beautiful and very unusual church and the abbey is also spectacular. There are shops on both sides of the harbour and many cafes and restaurants. Further afield is Robin Hood's bay which is a quaint and very pretty village. Great place for coastal walks and trying local beers. Plenty of history regarding Captain Cook, and the Dracula legend. The beach looks like it would be great in summer, we visited off season so all we did was walk along it. It looks like there would be plenty of sightseeing trips by boat, and fishing trips, available in summer. There is a great variety of restaurants, pubs, and smaller hotels, which should cater for most tastes. The emphasis is on fish dishes, and local beers and gins. Whitby is a lovely place to visit with lovely old streets and shops to explore, lovely harbour and great views from the abbey. Check other feedback regarding cleaning. We arrived to find a lovely place however let down by very poor cleaning dead fly's on window cils didn't think to much about it until we went outside and found a glass jar full of cigarettes ends left right next to the door. But to top it off there were dog poo bags witch had been left full of poo between the door step and drain cover which might of explained the dead fly's in the house as there was a half inch gap at the bottom of the kitchen door see pictures. I have emailed host and stay to bring it to there attention but received no refund or explanation. There is no secure garden for pets so be aware of that. So for £380 for 2 nights which was reduced I think it was very over priced. Check pics discusting. I forgot to mention dog poo in yard not picked up which I stood in. Whitby is the only remaining TRUE seaside resort left in the north, all the rest are run down and violent places. Whitby is well looked after and is always clean. The history of Whitby is so interesting. The medieval buildings, coastline and port are all stunning. The small narrow streets and shops. Absolutely beautiful. The majority of our stays have been at The Royal. It's central for everywhere ! Rooms are clean and comfortable, we paid extra for a sea-view and weren't disappointed. Spare pillows in the wardrobe, which we found useful. Breakfast is plentiful and varied, and being buffet style, you can go back for more.
