Very pleasant surprise - nice old town, well maintaned or taken care of, with small cafes, boutiques and nice, flowery streets. The Palamidi Castle towering over the city provides beautiful views, and the pedestrian routes at the coast are breathtaking. Nafplio was an excellent place to end our three week visit...
Nafplio was an excellent place to end our three week visit to Greece. It was relaxed and less chaotic then Athens. The old town is lovely to explore. Palamidi Fortress is a challenge and definitely worth the climb. Bourtzi Castle (!) is a short boat ride away and is a wonderful miniature version of a fairy tale Castle. Day trips to interesting sites are possible and ferry trips to some of the Greek Islands can be arranged from Nafplio. We went to Mycenae and Epidaurus with a locally hired guide who arranged taxi transport for us. Some of our group went on a catamaran evening sail and really enjoyed it. Nafplio is a rustic beautiful town Very clean with boutique shops and of course many souvenir shops My last visit was in 2001 and the amount of tourists has increased 10 fold. Near the hotel there are public parking spaces, but the spots are quite limited. The room we stay has many windows facing the direction of the sea. But outside window there is a house block you view, you can only see the sea a bit when you stand at a specific point.
