A very good base for very many superb beaches in southern Crete, with a nice beach within the town, some great shops and very good eating options both within the town and the surrounding villages. Plakias is a small town, out of the way and just what we...
Plakias is a small town, out of the way and just what we like. Reminiscent of Katelios on Kefalonia but a much bigger beach, with a quite well catered for naturist section at the southern end with two sunbeds and a parasol for EUR 9 per day or space to bring your own. The central to northern beach is mostly sunbed city but in this case the sand and sun are so hot you really need them. In late August, the sea was mostly calm but the wind can get up and waves got fairly strong at times. I visited the beach bar daily for liquid refreshment and the local beer mamos is perfect and EUR 5 for 500ml(?) seemed fair at this remote location. There is a small section of shops, bars and restaurants at the north end f town. We particularly liked Sofia's restaurant due to it's shorefront location, but we had nice meals elsewhere too. The area round the shops has been prettied up with a colourful fountain that children enjoyed playing in. Although hilly and winding roads dominate the whole region, the main street through town is a steady incline and no problem for most people. Plakias has a very pleasant beach-side walkway, good restaurants close to the beach,, a choice of supermarkets if needed, and a variety of hotels/resorts to suit different budgets. There is also the option of a naturist beach at the eastern end, and various boat or coach excursions are possible. It needs a proper bus station, instead of a patch of waste ground with no facilities as at present. A few years ago there was at least a kiosk from which tickets could be bought and timetable information was available. There are plenty of places offering food and drink.
There are plenty of places offering food and drink. We particularly liked Veranda, Ostrako, Sweet Creations and of course we had to visit Takis at Muses who genuinely remembered us from our previous visit 3 years before! Kri Kri, Kyma and Gialos also worth a visit. We did not have enough days to try all of the others! From traditional to modern. A very friendly place. A nice long level promenade which is an easy walk and which has been nicely paved. A long beach but is more shingle than sand. At the far end of the beach you can take the side roads and walk uphill if you need a bit more of a stretch. These connect back to the town. Beach bars and sun beds along the length of the beach but do not clutter it. Short drives to Souda Beach and to Dimnoni and Ammoudi Beaches - you have to have to have lunch at Chyma Sto Kyma at Ammoudi! It can sometimes be very windy on Crete and Plakias is no exception. The main beach isn't that great but just a few kilometres away at Ammoudia there are three great sandy beaches. There are plenty of good eateries in Plakias, all with great views of the sea, and a few bars. Prices are just right for this area. The scenery around Plakias is breathtaking, even though you can walk from one end of the town to the other on a fabulous level walkway. The layout was excellent and the room felt spacious.We loved the king bed and the bath tub. There was plenty of hot water available. The owner helped us carry the luggage and had the cutest sidekick :). The cats were adorable, too. I think Finikas was excellent value for money and we would stay again any time. Great location on the quite, western side of Plakias but only walking distance to nearby tavernas and shops. The room was cleaned regurarly and breakfast was served daily. Rooms were good size and beds very comfortable. The owner Mr Giorgos and the lady at reception Ms Maria made sure that we had an unforgettable time at Creta Mare Hotel.
