This is a tourist town that gets totally swamped during the day with cruise liner passengers. In the evening it is better and advice is to eat not in the main square or close by, go back into the back streets e.g. Sofokleous to find the more authentic restaurants. There are loads of shops all selling similar stuff to the tourist trade in the main streets. The walk around the medieval walls is impressive, the city is generally clean and being mostly traffic free (motor scooters excepted) is easy to walk around. Can get very noisy with loud music late into the night at the weekend. Nireas is by far the best fish restaurant, Vasilli is the worst. The historic little streets were full of shops, cafes and restaurants, but you could still get a sense of what the town was like centuries ago. Definitely worth a visit, as was Lindos for which we hired a car for only £40 for the day. Rhodes town is a fascinating place.
Rhodes town is a fascinating place. It is easy and safe to walk round at night and there is a good choice of restaurants. It does get crowded during the day however. Lots of history here. Best to visit sites/museums early or in the evening - warm evening air and fragrant breezes (we were there in late September and it was still hot in the day). Friendly and affordable, especially off the main tourist places/routes. Excellent food if you look around too. Everyone friendly and all spoke excellent English. Rhodes old town is absolutely beautiful an absolute must visit. But it's incredibly busy during the day loads of cruise ships . So much to see and do, impossible to appreciate it in 10 visits. The real problem is its popularity. At high season it's a sea of faces which makes it difficult to appreciate the sights. But we contributed to that a bit so I should not complain. If you can find your way to Socratous Garden for a beer of a meal then do so. An oasis of calm in a manic place. However, the best thing was the service. Whilst we had a few minor issues the host dealt with them absolutely amazingly and really went the extra mile.
