Lecce dazzles every visitor offering one of Italy’s best preserved walled historic centres. Its wonders include tasteful traditional cuisine, rich wines, and charming shops. We enjoyed wandering through the historic center, visiting the major tourist sites. The Faggiano Museum, a private museum displaying archeological finds under a private home was well worth the visit! Lecce was a surprise!
Lecce was a surprise! I didn't expect to enjoy the city as much as I did. I've travelled a great deal in northern Italy, but Lecce was a really comfortable, friendly, culturally and historically vibrant city. They call it the Florence of the south, and whilst that's a bit of an exaggeration, it certainly has a wonderful atmosphere and the locals were incredibly helpful, charming and happy to see tourists. Really delighted we overnighted in Lecce. Initially we intended only to do a day trip due to time pressures. Leece is an amazing historical town.
Leece is an amazing historical town. It is wonderful to see how the buildings are being preserved with such care and attention to detail and that there is so much excavation activity going on to preserve the history for generations to come. Beautiful and interesting town. We spent most of our time in the old town. It's a lovely place to get lost in! The building architecture, all the detail everywhere, the Roman ruins, the churches/cathedrals ... just amazing. I recommend taking a tour if you're able to. (The smaller the group, the better!) Cafes, bars, and restaurants abound. There are lots of touristy stores, but some higher quality and artisan places to be found if you look. We enjoyed Lecce very much. The city is large enough to explore but small enough to not be overwhelmed. The architecture is beyond gorgeous. We had some of our favorite meals here. Lecce is a great place to stay as a home base to explore the Salento region. We did not have a car & were limited to what we could see. However there are many day tours that leave from Lecce.
