The Masterpiece of Puccini
Once Italy’s 2nd largest city state, elegant Lucca remains an important town on any itinerary in beautiful Tuscany. Its instantly recognisable historic centre is completely surrounded by Renaissance-era walls which offer a leisurely ‘passeggiata’.
Tree-lined bastions overlook the surrounding modern town, but their low height means that the best photo opportunities of medieval Lucca are from Torre Guinigi. This tower topped with trees overlooks the rooftops below and lush mountains beyond.
The bell tower of San Frediano is even taller and stands back from the elaborate gold mosaic adorning the church’s façade. Equally interesting is Lucca Cathedral’s façade where every column is unique. The church of San Michele in Foro is on the site of the Roman forum, and the Domus Romana excavations are of a house from a similar era.
Roman amphitheatre remains also form foundation stones of the medieval houses, cafés and shops of oval-shaped Piazza Anfiteatro. More pavement restaurants line Piazza Napoleone, Lucca’s largest square, around the corner from San Giovanni church, home to a festival celebrating Puccini – the town’s most famous son. Unsurprisingly, music is a big thing here, and summer and winter festivals showcase genres other than just opera.

The narrow streets reveal something special at each turn. A very easy city to navigate, particularly after a climb up the Duomo Clocktower. I was entranced by many of the old shop fronts, with attractive Art Nouveau/Art Deco designs, carefully preserved like most of this magical city. Lucca is a beautiful city with a lot to see and do. From walking around the wall of the city to experiencing a Puccini concert, there is something for everyone. There are many good bars and restaurants and climbing to the top of the towers for a spectacular view is a must. The people are friendly and helpful and it is not as crowded and touristy as places such as Pisa. Lucca is a nice afternoon and evening. The raised wall around the city can be walked or biked. The historic center is interesting and the restaurant In Pasta a charming small restaurant where you watch the cooking. We heard about Lucca from some people when we were in a restaurant in Pisa. We decided to visit because of their enthusiasm and because it was not very far by train. We were very impressed by Lucca's attractions and the local were friendly and helpful. We flew into Pisa, but choses to stay in Lucca because of the parkrun on Saturday morning. Then we set about finding out what Lucca had to offer, and it was a lot! Beautiful walled city, where every street is pretty and a joy to walk along. Lots of cafes, restaurants, ice cream places and other shops. The walk along the wall was pleasant and had great views of the city and the Tuscan hills. Location was perfect just off the freeway. Arrived late in the evening and was met by 2 friendly staff members. I booked a single room but the bed was at least a double size and the room spacious.
