Matera is a magical place that is hard to describe in words. Yes, visually it’s breathtaking. There are photo opportunities around every corner, but take the time to walk the laneways slowly and really appreciate where you are. There are lots of stairs but there is no hurry to be anywhere so take a leisurely pace, stop for a rest, a meal, a drink or a gelato at the many cafes and restaurants. Great place to visit but parking a bit of an issue.
Great place to visit but parking a bit of an issue. Main car park we used was €10 a day and was very tight so no wonder most cars had scrapes and bangs on them 😳. An evening walking tour with guide was absolutely superb and a real must. Gaetano, our guide was brilliant and so much cooler to do in the evening. Want a unique experience then you must see Matera . We stayed in Locanda di san martino which has thermal baths and enjoyed a massage .Took an open car with guide and was worth it, went into a cave dwelling set up as it was in days gone .We just fell in love with the sassi in Matera !Guest review bymichelleAustralia - 10.0

Matera is quite a unique place to visit and Sassi Matera is nothing like I’ve ever seen and had I known that we would have planned a longer stay. It was so easy to enter the Sassi and you could go up/down and enter/exit in so many places. Matera was bigger than I had imagined, very clean and progressive.
