Well worth the visit.
Well worth the visit. Be prepared to navigate the long narrow up and down stony steps and it could be quite slippery when wet too. If you’re unable on foot there’s little tourist cart that can take you around for a “price” of course but one shouldn’t be discouraged young and old with disabilities. Matera is a magical place that is hard to describe in words.
Matera is a magical place that is hard to describe in words. Yes, visually it’s breathtaking. There are photo opportunities around every corner, but take the time to walk the laneways slowly and really appreciate where you are. There are lots of stairs but there is no hurry to be anywhere so take a leisurely pace, stop for a rest, a meal, a drink or a gelato at the many cafes and restaurants. Great place to visit but parking a bit of an issue. Main car park we used was €10 a day and was very tight so no wonder most cars had scrapes and bangs on them 😳. An evening walking tour with guide was absolutely superb and a real must. Gaetano, our guide was brilliant and so much cooler to do in the evening. The view on the terrace over the city is stunning and so peaceful. The cave apartment is cosy and everything has been done to a very high standard.
