FAQs about hotels in Palermo

A Symbol of Sicily

Edgy and eclectic, Palermo is a symbol of all that Sicily stands for. From buzzing Vespas to the bustling Vucciria market, it simply brims with life.

Wonderful Palermo Cathedral glows radiantly in the Mediterranean sun. Nearby is the city’s last Sicilian Puppet Theatre, and opposite is a palm-filled park housing Roman mosaics, though the best are in the archaeological museum. At one end is the Norman Palace, a government building home to the fabulous Cappella Palatina whose gold mosaics are absolutely breathtaking.

Equally magnificent are the gold mosaics lining 12th-century Monreale Cathedral on the city’s outskirts. Wander the cloisters and note the varying columns and capitals – each pair is different.

Palermo also has fascinating churches: 2 of the oldest are 12th-century San Giovanni degli Eremeti and San Cataldo, each with red, Islamic-style domes. Gesú Church has an incredible Sicilian Baroque interior, while La Martorana’s frescoes are awe-inspiring. A street away is Quattro Canti, a crossroads with a fountain at each corner.

Other attractions include round Teatro Massimo, Mondello beach and Monte Pellegrino mountain overlooking the sea. You get fabulous views of this picnic spot as you fly into Palermo Airport before heading to your Booking.com accommodation.

Here is a tip I forgot! ALWAYS bring your own toilet paper or wipes, always have euro's handy for tips and the toilet (though there most likely will be no toilet paper) and I felt that a 2 day stay would have been much better than 6 days.

Palermo is a vibrant city with a beautiful blend of people, cultures, and languages. Even though at times there might have been a language barrier, the Sicilians were always willing to help or go get someone who could help more. If using the public transit, which I highly recommend, you buy the tickets for the tram (AMAT) either on the tram from a person with a yellow vest or when you reach the Central Station. You can buy day passes for a very reasonable price at the ticket box on the outside of the station, look for AMAT! The passes can be used for the tram and buses, use Google Maps to help navigate the different lines and bus numbers to take to wherever you want to go. Good luck and happy adventuring!

We spent two and a half days (three nights) in Palermo. While the city felt safe and the people were genuinely warm and welcoming, the streets were quite dirty and not well maintained, which took away from the overall experience. That said, the food was absolutely incredible - from street eats to sit-down meals, every bite was full of flavor and authenticity. In hindsight, we probably would have spent a bit less time there, but it's definitely worth a short visit for the amazing food and vibrant local culture.

The old city centre has numerous points of interest.

The old city centre has numerous points of interest. The restaurants are plentiful and our food experience was very good. We participated in a street food walk-about and a separate restaurant based cooking class. Both were very enjoyable experiences. The caution pertains to the many scooters that are driven by young people on very narrow 'streets' with seemingly little regard for pedestrians.

Palermo is a fabulous historical city.

Palermo is a fabulous historical city. So much to see and do. Fantastic food, with loads of restaurants and bars to choose from. We had an amazing night at the Opera at the beautiful Teatro Massimo. We visited the Cathedral and the Norman Palace, which were both very beautiful. We enjoyed the street markets and had some great food there. There is also the gorgeous, peaceful botanical gardens situated near to the port. It is very easy to get around Palermo on foot and there is a good bus service, which we used to go for a day out at Mondello beach, which is about 40 minutes away. Can't wait to go back!

The communal spaces are lovely, the rooms are nicely decorated and very comfortable, breakfast was well laid out, the terrace on the roof was great and great views towards the sea. It is a perfect place to stay to explore Palermo. It is not like staying in a hotel more like living in a villa which we loved and with only 11 rooms felt very boutique.

Sicily is our favourite place in Italy and, every year, we make sure we stop in Palermo, its cultural hub. This place and his host were perfect example of scicillian culture - kind and welcoming. A simple gesture like giving you a bottle of water for the upcoming journey in the hot weather, is a perfect example of how special Sicilian people are
