Italy’s Answer to Vienna

Near the Slovenian border, Trieste combines the waterside setting of Venice with the elegance of Vienna. The Habsburgs ruled here for over 500 years and built Miramare Castle on a rocky outcrop to the north-west. Their other influences include stately Piazza Unità d’Italia, looking out to sea and spectacularly lit at night.

But this is just a glimpse into Trieste's long and fascinating history. The 1st-century Riccardo Arch hides in a narrow street, and part-way up the hills behind the city centre are Roman theatre remains, while columns from the Roman forum stand next to San Giusto castle and cathedral.

The most photographed church is Sant’Antonio Nuovo, overlooking a boat-lined canal. The nearby Stock Exchange has a colonnaded façade and its square houses some of the city’s shops. The most popular cultural attraction is the Revoltella Museum of modern art, while more sobering is Risiera di San Sabba, a former concentration camp near the Palatrieste and Nereo Rocco sports stadiums.

Watersports include windsurfing and kitesurfing from the port which is an important coffee importer. Unsurprisingly, the city’s Viennese-style coffee houses serve top-quality brews, and the best is reportedly Caffè San Marco, once frequented by famous authors.

    I absolutely loved the location of my hotel in Trieste.

    I absolutely loved the location of my hotel in Trieste. It was walkable for everything on my bucket list except Miramare Castle. I took the Hop on Hop off to the Castle. So many excellent restaurants and cafe all within a couple of blocks of the hotel. I was taking a cruise from Trieste which is why I choice the hotel. It was only less than a 10 minute walk. Also, the sunsets on the pier of the Adriatic Sea are within a 8 minute walk of the hotel. Wonderful stay!!

    We liked the fact that you could walk to all areas of the city. Architecture was spectacular and city was spotless. The trip to Miramare castle was well worth it. Grounds, interior and views were beautiful.

    Went on the tourist tram up to Via Stradicana / Napoleonica.

    Went on the tourist tram up to Via Stradicana / Napoleonica. Get off at Obelisk stop not end at Opicina. Tram is a little hairy especially just after the start when they add a second engine; also crowded. There is also the 64 bus right nearby if you think might be queasy. Central Trieste has been thoroughly refurbished during Covid and looks like a set from Studio Ghibli. The old town is buzzing with bars and restaurants. A treasure for James Joyce fans.

    An interesting town on the cross-roads of European civilisations, with a special resonance today. My wife and I are well travelled. We did not visit any of the sites you mentioned.. But we enjoyed the general atmosphere.

    A surprising, vibrant city which, in this reviewer's opinion, merits more attention as a tourist destination! Its long and rich history, and cultural and educational strengths, make it a great base for extended exploration of surrounding Slovenia and Croatia, not to mention Venice.

    Clean and friendly city.

    Clean and friendly city. Great restaurants and old city area. Nearby Miramare Castle/Palace is a must-see. Hire e-bikes and ride around the bay to Miramare. Only 1 canal, which is closed off, so it's not Venice, but way less crowds too!

    The staff is very polite and proffesional. The hotel is very nice and clean, our room was very comfortable and warm, the bathroom was very spacious. We were there only for 1 night because we had to catch a flight early in the morning. We chose this hotel because it was very close to the Trieste Centrale train station where we had to catch a train to airport early in the morning. Everything in hotel was excellent, but location was the best thing. 2 minutes walking distance to train station. We will for sure reccomend it.

    The rooms were much more comfortable than we expected from a 2 star hotel. We had two connecting rooms which is perfect for a family with teenage kids and not easy to find. I appreciated the fact that there were lots of pillows and even little biscuits on the bed. The breakfast was excellent, better than I’ve had in some 5 star hotels. The staff were very friendly and helpful. It was very quiet considering we were right in the centre of Trieste.

    Perfect location in the very near of the old town, reception only open in the afternoon, but the hotel is offering a perfect solution for online checkin, and also sending information well in advance. Rooms are modern, clean an very well maintained. When going back to Triest one day I would again choose Elisabeth Boutique Rooms!

    Best place we have stayed while travelling Italy. Great location, everything that we needed was supplied and more. The room was very clean, great air conditioning, spacious and felt brand new. Would have loved to stay here longer and we will definitely be coming back when travelling to Trieste.
