Venice has to be seen and experienced. All the stories about the crowds are true. There are queues for the main sites but for good reason. The main streets are crowded but if you walk one or two streets away, you will have a much different experience. We visited in mid October.
We visited in mid October. The weather was lovely and I imagine the crowds are smaller than during the summer. Venice still seemed busy but we didn't feel overwhelmed. Book in advance for Saint Mark's Basilica; we didn't and it was sold out the day we tried to visit. Murano is well worth a visit. A water taxi to and from the airport is a real treat and I recommend it if your budget can stretch to it - the drivers seem to prefer cash to cards! We managed to circumnavigate most of the island on the 7 and 4.1 vaporettos and this was a great way to see the sights.
