Just beautiful. The temple is gorgeous and serene. We had the family room with a private bathroom which was clean and a good size for our family. The dinner was perfection and one of the best meals we had in Japan. We wish we had booked for longer.

A really nice shukubo experience - definitely recommend it. You get a sense of the daily life of the monks, and it is well located next to all the main sights in Koya. In the morning, you can participate in two rituals, and they are as depicted on the photos. Hope to be back some day!

Paola is incredibly kind and attentive. Every detail in her Japanese-style guesthouse has been carefully chosen. She has put so much thought into selecting each piece, and each has its own story. Throughout my stay, I felt a sense of peace and love. ........ Thank you so much, Paola. I’m so happy to have met you and to have stayed at Koyasan Space. I look forward to seeing you again!

I love everything about the temple: the accommodations, the people, the routine, the foods, the location, the serenity it brings. It was the best trip I had this year, also the best experience - especially that everything here so simple yet leave strong impression on me. I travel with my close friend and we both decide to come back next year. I really miss the place and want to come back once hit the city.

Koyasan is a historic, spiritual, naturally beautiful location. The ability to be around active temples and attend fire ceremony was unforgettable. The information center and excellent bus system made it easy to navigate. However, if you like to walk, most sights are easily walked to, as it is quite flat. There were several nice coffee houses and the place that offers night tours of Okunoin also is a bar in the evening, serving excellent local craft beers. A surprise.

I came here for the history and the experience of staying in a monastery/pilgrim lodging, but I left with much more than that, as all the people I met here were wonderful, from fellow travelers to local cafe owners. One word of advice would be to take your time exploring Oku no In cemetery, as it's worth a good long contemplative walk.

Thoroughly enjoyed experiencing how the monks live and eat.

Thoroughly enjoyed experiencing how the monks live and eat. We arrived on a Friday afternoon, wondered into the info centre Saturday & they were very helpful. Walked through the cemetery & then had lunch in one of the cafes open. Not many open on a Saturday or Sunday. Sunday a.m we experience the Ceremony half by the Monks in the main temple. Wouldn’t visit again in the winter as it’s extremely cold.

Okunoin cemetery --meditative walk-- was lovely.

Okunoin cemetery --meditative walk-- was lovely. Would have enjoyed having more time to visit the town. We only stayed one night (which is good, because it was very expensive). However, the train logistics from Okayama meant that we ararived in Koyasan about 2pm and so had very little time to see it. We left after lunch the following day. Two fuller days and one night would have been ideal.

Staying at the temple was a delightful experience.

Staying at the temple was a delightful experience. The food was different but very good, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Attending the morning prayer was another highlight, providing a truly memorable experience. The location was excellent, being very close to the bus stop. The staff were extremely nice and accommodating, allowing us to drop off our luggage before the check-in time. Although everything was great, I personally didn't like the heater in the room. I think it uses some kind of oil, and for me personally, the oil smell was a little too strong. Next time, I would prefer a room with an attached washroom. Since it's an old temple, it doesn't have central heating, which is understandable, but it gets a little cold outside of the room when going to use the washrooms. The rooms aren't that comfortable, but we already knew that since we went for the experience, not for comfort. Just wanted to add that!

    Nature and spirituality

Nature and spirituality We ended our 3 week trip to Japan with 2 nights in Koyasan at a buddhist temple. It was a magical place, completely different from everything we had visited in Japan beforehand. The temples with their architecture, the local food and the kind locals really made this an unforgettable experience. On our last day we went for a hike on the Women´s trail, had a great lunch close to the Daimon gate and took a 2h walk through the Okunoin cementary which is one of the most incredible places I have been so far. Go without any expectations and it will be the a unique experience!

Tourists beware: this is not an hotel. This is a temple, and as a temple it must be respected in all its aspects. The structure is not “rich” but is comfortable and in a very beautiful setting. The garden is pure magic and the monks are friendly and willing to share their knowledge. The position is perfect for visiting Koyasan and its treasures. Please, respect this place.

The room had a garden view which was a treat to wake up to; and the house was only a 5 minute walk to the main street of Koyasan. It was a treat to stay in a more 'traditional' Japanese setting rather than a hotel room, and the hosts were very welcoming & friendly.
