This was honestly one of the most welcoming and thoughtful places we’ve ever stayed. From the moment we arrived, Sydney and his team looked after us so well. The chef asked what we fancied and was very accommodating. He cooked the most amazing curry, lunch and honey hoppers for breakfast (which we were introduced to and absolutely loved). They even gave us a packed lunch for our elephant boat safari, which they organised, along with a great driver. There were little extra touches that made such a different, like beers in the fridge when we arrived (and they went to get more when we ran out), a cooking class with a local family, a really interesting forest walk with an indigenous guide and when we asked if we could do some laundry they sorted it for us with no trouble at all. The cottage is in a beautiful, quiet spot with amazing Mountain View’s, a perfect place to switch off. Would highly recommend supporting this amazing project. Such a great experience 😊😊

This is a sensational property in a wonderful location close to Gal Oya NP. Every single staff member were brilliant. Friendly, attentive, informative and nothing too much trouble . This hotel is well and truly off the beaten track! Clever because wherever you have arrived from it means you have driven through lush countryside to get here and it really has been worth your while. Set in grounds that boast access via a jetty to Gal Oya Lake, this hotel is reminiscent of a private country club. The limited guest accommodation lends an air of exclusivity while its spacious suites have tastefully decorated bedrooms with large adjoining bath/dressing rooms; double flyscreened doors take you onto your verandah with a vista of the huge lake beyond the palm trees and pool. Meals are served in a separate open sided pavilion overlooking this vast property. All this has been thoughtfully designed by one of the hosts, Thomas a renowned German architect, to complement the surrounding spectacular views. Guests are made to feel most welcome here by Dinesh the other host and his team, Mohan and Samson. Jeep or boat safaris can be arranged by the staff and kayaks are also available onsite if you wish to explore beyond the hotel’s shores.

Great food - very substantial breakfasts and dinners. The owner arranged a boat safari for us including transfer. He organised the jeep safari himself according to the current whereabouts of the animals so that we could see as much as possible. He knows the area very well. He also arranged the transfer to the next accommodation. Everything went like clockwork and was on time. Highly recommended!

Charitha Rest provides an open-air bath, as well as air-conditioned accommodation in Ampara. There is a private entrance at the guest house for the convenience of those who stay.

Lovely local guesthouse that was well maintained and comfortable. I especially liked that they had net curtains and a mosquito net over the bed so you could sleep with the windows open and the fan on, fresh air is the best! Such a charming town, with all the necessities close by.

My family (including teenage boys) and I had a wonderful stay here. The rooms were comfortable and clean. The hosts were incredibly friendly and welcoming and produced a delicious supper and breakfast for us. We were positively surprised by the beautiful setting - if I could post some photos on this site, I definitely would! The property is surrounded by beautiful palm trees, wonderful fruit trees around the back and amazing spices, as well as a luscious green paddy field, all of which the host kindly showed us. The property is opposite a very pretty river and not far from the Gal Oya lake safari start. Would definitely recommend!
