Thambu illam was one of my favourite stays in Sri Lanka! I felt at home and comfortable. The staff were amazing including the night time security, Joseph, who kept us company and shared his story while we stayed up past midnight. Mathu the manager checked in with us when we didn’t arrive on time for our booking and he responded quickly to messages. The supervisor was exceptionally helpful and got us almost anything we requested for our meals. Thambu illam brings you a feeling of being in your ancestral home and the little details they paid attention makes it even magical. We will definitely come back here to stay with our family on our next trip.

Staff exceptional and so helpful. Special mention to Praveen who helped secure 2 rooms for both driver n guide. So close to railway station too. Clean spacious bright rooms and great buffet spread. Will recommend to future friends who want to travel to Jaffna.

Very friendly staff. It's actually a home stay. I think the owner's family lives on the ground floor. But rooms are up to standards. Good A/c. The toilet is alright. But i had a issue with water stream.

We enjoyed visiting the Nallur temple, fish market and...

We enjoyed visiting the Nallur temple, fish market and fishing village and especially the excursions around the Jaffna peninsula and the nearby islands. August is a great month to be in Jaffna, as there are temple festivals all around, with music and rituals. For a nice cold beer and some snacks, the Machang bar / restaurant - near the modern North Gate Hotel - is highly recommended. For a mid-morning snack, the old-fashioned Malayan café near the busy market is a great place where time seems to have stood still. Food is served on fresh banana leaves - which are thrown away in the 'banana leaf throwing station'. For a decent evening meal, head to the Valampuri restaurant - in the hotel of the same name. You'll be surrounded by lots of Sri Lankan family groups.

"Jaffna is a truly impressive city—very clean, peaceful, and notably low on traffic. We had a wonderful stay at the North Gate Hotel, situated right next to the railway station. What surprised and delighted us most was the spotless condition of the Jaffna Railway Station. In our experience, railway areas are typically the dirtiest, but the excellent maintenance here created a lovely and quiet environment right outside our hotel. Our sincere thanks to the Railway Master for setting such a high standard! We absolutely loved our visit and look forward to returning."

Jaffna is still an unspoiled and hidden gem of a city.

Jaffna is still an unspoiled and hidden gem of a city. People are super friendly and the city is bustling and easy to navigate. There is a beech just outside the city center which is quiet and beautiful. It was very hot when we visited in july but we did not mind this at all.

Jaffna is lovely city and it’s a shame we didn’t stay longer. It has changed a lot since our last visit 7 years ago with a lot more development but a shame so many franchises have opened up. It has a nice mix of tourist attractions and yet maintains its charm as a local area. The Rio ice cream is the best! I wish we had more time to enjoy local cuisine.

Jaffna is a hot place and therefore the transport facilities should facilitate the climate. Jaffna is also not clean as compared to the other places in Sri Lanka. Need a concerted public awareness campaign to all residents of Jaffna. People's attitude should change !!!

A gorgeous traditional home converted into a boutique hotel with four rooms - perfect for a group or solo/couple travellers. Beautifully styled and managed by a delightful and attentive staff team ready to cater to any request or give local guidance. The swimming pool was the perfect oasis after a day of exploring steamy Jaffna. Special thanks to Mathci, Sutha and Niranjan. Oh and great food too - but please be aware most food is prepared off site which makes total sense - so just relax go with the flow. It’s worth the wait.

The hotel is very new (only a few months I think) and there weren't many (or any?) other guests when I stayed, so it was very quiet. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, the food was tasty and the kitchen was open whenever I wanted to eat or drink something. The location was amazing, I was walking everywhere in town from there and it is very convenient for both the bus station and the train station. Would absolutely stay here again if (when!) I come back to Jaffna.

This hotel is set in a large leafy garden with the outdoor eating area shaded by a huge jackfruit tree. The rooms are spacious and very clean. The shower was exceptional. The beds and pillows were comfortable. Breakfast had a choice of options which was very good. We ate here for dinner on our first night and the meal was well prepared and presented. We had our own vehicle and parking was available on site. It was a short drive to Jaffna Fort and the centre of town.

Really nice hotel, with great room and facilities. Staff were friendly, lots of local knowledge and always happy to help. Well situated, extremely close to Nallur temple, and Nallur and Jaffna markets are easily accessible. Fantastic traditional and continental breakfast; dosa, idiyappam, palappam. Would definitely recommend to others, and would visit again.
