Between Dutch Windmills and Flowers
The gateway to the Netherlands, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is one of the world’s busiest international passenger terminals and home to the Dutch national airline, KLM.
The airport sits on reclaimed land around 10 feet below sea level on the site of a former huge inland lake. In fact, the name Schiphol may mean "ship grave," a reference to the ships that would periodically be sunk in its turbulent waters.
A train station serving many Dutch cities lies beneath the terminal building which houses a mini Rijksmuseum exhibition, reference library with multilingual books, and plenty of shops selling the ubiquitous clogs, tulip bulbs and cheese.
Booking.com’s range of Schiphol Airport hotels includes several on-site hotels. Others are in neighboring Hoofddorp, a town also within the area of the former lake, whose De Eersteling windmill overlooks a dike encircling a former fort.
Another windmill, the Molen van Sloten, is across a canal from Badhoevedorp on the airport’s north side. To the east, the huge Amsterdamse Bos forest is a haven of peace and tranquillity (apart from the occasional aircraft!) and borders Amstelveen. To the southwest is Aalsmeer, a town set on the huge Westeinderplassen Lake, and whose massive flower auction house receives daily consignments from all over the world.

The Shiphol Airport is our favourite airport to enter and leave Europe. The Shiphol Plaza inside the airport gives you the option to eat for the first - or the last time - depends if you're coming or going - a delicious bite of European food. You may also just land with a carry-on and start shopping for clothes there. As Shiphol offers free WiFi you're able to navigate around even if your cell phone plan is not covering Europe. The main hall is also the entrance to the train station where you can start with a train (don't forget to buy a ticket at one of the many ticket machines, or pre-book online) to Amsterdam Centraal Station in the middle of Amsterdam.Guest review byVeronikaCanada - 10

If you are passing through Schiphol, it's usually good.
If you are passing through Schiphol, it's usually good. They have a speed track for those making connections with a short layover at passport control. However, in the summer, they get lots of thunderstorms, and so flights don't often arrive on time. If you get stuck there, the Dutch are not particularly warm or helpful, so expect a calloused response to any requests for help, particularly from KLM and the border agents at passport control who seem suspicious about why you are in Amsterdam in the first place.Guest review bydouglasUnited States - 4.0
