Swidnica itself did not catch my eye; I was surprised the Tourist Info could not reference me to Anna Swidnicka, the celebrated wife of Charles IV (14th century). But the city is an excellent hub for nearby locations: Ksiaz complex & Palm House, Sowie Gory, the pilgrim location of Sleza giving the name to the whole region. Everybody should read “the Bloodlands” by Timothy Snider. Once you read this book, or know your history, you will better understand a town like this, which once was clearly wealthy and part of Germany, and is now recovering in a Poland that is on the right way. It is a small and quaint town with beautiful old buildings, some still awaiting repair. There is a nice park and many restaurants, none of which I tried. Swidnica is a great base if you want to explore the mountains along the Polish-Czech borders, but it's also a very interesting town (pop. 57,000) in its own right. It has easy-going, friendly people and everything you might need in terms of food and shopping (even its own shopping centre). It's easy and pleasant to walk around. A beautiful city with heritage landmarks, a significant cathedral, lots of history. Well maintained parks, great taxi services. The city square is a pleasant place to walk, shop, and sit outside in the cafes. Still have local farmers bringing in fresh produce on the square.
