    Taos is remaking itself.

Taos is remaking itself. Our first trip was in the 1960s and we have seen many changes and now it is showing a brighter self. The Taos Pueblo is always a great stop and by taking the tour you have a chance to learn what you are experiencing. There is so much History all around you. The museums are awesome. and there is no shortage of Good food.

Very surprised that I enjoyed Taos more than Santa Fe.

Very surprised that I enjoyed Taos more than Santa Fe. Excellent galleries and unlike Santa Fe where you risk being hit by a car when walking to galleries (bc there are no sidewalks down Canyon Road and parking at those galleries is impossible), it was super easy to get around. Beautiful art, jewelry, weavings, lovely artisans and shopkeepers. Just a laid back nice comfortable town.

Maybe we were there for the wrong season and didn't do enough research prior. We took our fat-tire ebikes with us and found that we could not find a trail to use for ebikes. Every trail we checked said, "No ebikes." We were really looking forward to bike riding without traffic, and they had bike lanes throughout town but there was a lot of traffic during the day. We were there for our 44th wedding anniversary and thought we'd spend time shopping, visiting local scenery, and biking. It's a small town and shops/restaurants close earlier than we expected. We did visit a few places that had great food, like the Gorge Bar and Grill for sandwich and fries, Orlando's for their Los Colores and tamales, and Chokola for chocolate and coffee mousse. All three places had wonderful servers/help (especially the Gorge). One restaurant we visited said they open at 7, but then they came out and let everyone know they'd have to stand around for another half our before they opened due to lack of staffing. The shops were nice and we exhausted ourselves by walking all day. Personally, I found the prices to be higher than where we live in a tourist center of Colorado. We left early the next day for home. If you intend to visit Taos, do some research based on what you enjoy doing to make sure you can. Check the time the stores and restaurants close. It's a cute little town but just wasn't for us.

You can walk easily from the Inn to the Plaza and the local galleries. The Inn also has a small cafe/restaurant on the Plaza. The Taos Inn is a short walk from the Benavides Inn. You would need a car to visit the Taos Pueblo, the Rio Grande Gorge, The Fechin House and the Millicent Rogers Museum. Had drinks and appetizers at the Taos Inn patio and listened to live music.

Taos is great because there are shops and restaurants that are fun, but then there is access to really diverse and beautiful scenery. The Rio Grande gorge is rocky and like a small Grand Canyon. Then the long expanses of scrubland framed by the mountains are beautiful. Then Taos Ski Valley is alpine-like, while Hopewell Lake is area has the CDT and aspens. It's a great visit.

Discover Taos – The Heart of Northern New Mexico

Discover Taos – The Heart of Northern New Mexico Taos is a charming old town where history and culture are very much alive. At its center is a vibrant plaza still bustling with activity, surrounded by unique shops, galleries, and eateries. Just a short distance away, you’ll find the Taos Pueblo—an ancient Native American village that has remained unchanged for centuries and is still inhabited today. It’s a must-see for its beauty, history, and living culture. Shopping in Taos is an adventure in itself, and when it comes to dining, chili peppers are the star of the show! Whether you prefer red or green—or “Christmas” style (a mix of both)—you’ll find this flavorful tradition celebrated in nearly every dish. Looking for a night out? Tin Can Alley often features live music on Friday and Saturday evenings, offering a lively spot to unwind. For breakfast, Michael’s Kitchen is a local favorite, known for its fresh, hearty dishes and their amazing Piñon coffee. Azteca is another gem offering both indoor and outdoor dining—I highly recommend their Christmas chili. It’s a thing here, trust me! Beyond Taos, the natural beauty of New Mexico awaits. From hiking, skiing, and fly fishing to wine tasting, horseback riding, and white-water rafting, there's no shortage of outdoor adventures. To the west lies Ojo Caliente, perfect for a relaxing spa day. Head southwest to explore Los Alamos, or go south to Española and Santa Fe—the oldest state capital in the U.S., rich in art, history, and culture. Wherever you go, New Mexico truly lives up to its name—The Land of Enchantment. There’s something here for everyone.

This place is a wonderful place in Taos at a reasonable price. Rooms are spacious, beds are VERY comfortable, nice hot pool - also open in winter. But the actual highlight is the breakfast. It almost seems like a sumptuous European breakfast with many (freshly made) warm options. And….. you get real plates and cutlery which is very rare for the US. Another nice detail are the wide selection of tees and coffees during the day - together with good quality nachos and cookies.

Robert and Jules were exceptional. Amazing hospitality and it was great to have a change from the large hotels. This place is unique and provides an atmosphere that is welcoming, homely and relaxing. Robert was an amazing inn keeper who was very helpful and a delight to get to know.

Absolutely charming hotel. Leading the way in customer care thanks to Sheldon and Elijah. Probably the most comfortable bed I slept in during my 3 week stay in NM. With such great character it was easy to love La Fonda.
