Townsend was great! Better than all the hustle and bustle of Gatlinburg and Sieverville. I recommend the Abbey restaurant which is right on the Little River. I really liked the walking and biking trail around town. It was easy to get to the Smokies from this location. Townsend is a great place to stay if you are averse to the craziness of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. We visited the Smoky Mountain Heritage Center, which was very well done. We hiked the Cades Cove Loop Road, which unfortunately was not closed to traffic on Wednesdays in May, as it has been in past years.
