We have amazing beaches in New Zealand, so finding Piriapolis and its beach was an absolute treat. Relaxed atmosphere and friendly people. We enjoyed breakfast at the Argentino Hotel and excellent coffee at Donna Donas. There was friendly service at other hospitality businesses and at our local supermarket—a great place to do nothing much. It's an easy drive to the big smoke, Punta del Este, for retail therapy and a look around. The wildlife park is an enjoyable diversion from the beaches, should one feel in the mood for a walkabout.
