Location: right next to the station, literally. Couldn't be easier. Takayama isn't that big, so you're already within walking distance of all the main attractions and many places to eat.
Facilities: my room had a more or less full size kitchen, a huge refrigerator, a washing machine and multiple trash cans. This was easily the most complete hotel room of my entire stay in Japan.
There is a pretty big balcony that you can access by way of sliding doors. And there is also a sliding mosquito screen to keep out bugs. Perfect!
What I like about the building: While this hotel only has 1 elevator for like 10 floors, there is an open stairway inside the building that you can use. It is not limited to emergencies only. I have gratefully made use of this when I wanted to leave the hotel but there was an entire family with suitcases waiting for the elevator.
Another big plus, the hotel has a secondary entrance/exit, so you don't have to pass reception when you want to get in or out of the hotel.

We went as a group and we loved the ryokan. It was very spacious, everything was very clean, and it was conveniently located near the bus station, the train station, and the city center where most of the shopping takes place. The rooms were the most spacious we stayed in throughout Japan, and the staff were all very kind. I would definitely stay here again.

I love the house; it is cozy and beautifully designed. The breakfast options, whether Western or Japanese, were superb. The highlight of my stay was the wonderful hospitality. Tai and his parents were exceptional hosts. Tai’s restaurant recommendations were excellent, and he even made reservations for us. Although Soy is located outside of town, it’s just one bus ride away. If they're available, the hosts are more than happy to drive us to and from town.

If you’re visiting Takayama, you MUST stay here. We had the most wonderful stay with the most wonderful hosts. I travel for work often, domestic and international, and typically stay at 4 and 5 star hotels. This is definitely among my favorite stays in my travels!
We arrived shortly before check-in time and were greeted with tea, a snack, and warm blankets. The host sat down and showed us a map of all the best attractions in Takayama while we drank our tea.
Our room and the entire ryokan were immaculately clean (very important to me) and super cozy. I actually looked forward to going back to the room each night to spend time near the coals or under the heated blanket table (the room has great AC and heat by the way). They also provided plenty of Japanese snacks, coffee, tea, incense, and even origami.
The real reason you should stay here is because of the hospitality of the hosts and uniqueness of the experience. They were so happy to see us each time we arrived back at the property and were willing to answer any questions we had along the way. It was a treat to see them each day!
Breakfast was included each day and you can choose a traditional Japanese style breakfast or a western style breakfast. I highly recommend trying the Japanese breakfast at least one day! It was intimidating for a westerner but is quite delicious and the staff will guide you through the whole experience.
The onsen was perfect, so relaxing, and very clean. We went at the end of each day around 9 PM and there was no one in the onsen so it was basically private! The property is intimate and you don't need to worry about a lot of folks using the onsen at once.
One note, the property is about a 20 minute walk from the main Takayama area but that wasn’t an issue for us. In fact it was perfect. It was so nice to wander through the side roads getting into and out of town. In fact, we came across more than one restaurant or sake brewery by just wandering around.
