It didn’t feel like being traveling but more like being welcomed by family. The rooms are in a traditional style and the futon was super comfy. The only downside was, that the place is located far out of Akita, but if you travel by car or don’t mind of taking the bus and walk through along some fields (f you travel with a backpack) it is definitely worth a stay.

The couple running the place are really kind, they treated me like family. We ate together, chatted together, they told me all the best onsen and restaurants around the house. They were so kind, it’s hard to describe. The house was cleaned and functional and there are a lot of onsen and restaurants at a walking distance from there. I stayed one more day just to be around those people more. Thank you, Taku and Midori for a nice stay.

Minpaku Suzuki is set in Hiraizumi, less than 1 km from Motsuji Temple, 2.5 km from Chuson-ji Temple, and 5.5 km from Takkoku Seikou-ji Temple. The traditional japanese room is big and spacious, and while no bath is available on premise, Mr. Suzuki drove me to both a public bathhouse and local restaurant in the evenings. Mrs. Suzuki had a very large and delicious japanese meal cooked up for breakfast. The pair were even kind enough to help me plan out my trip around the local area after breakfast! Located a short walk away from Hiraizumi station and an even shorter walk to the nearby Mōtsū-ji, I highly recommend Minpaku Suzuki to anyone interested in staying in Hiraizumi! Will definitely be planning another stay!

Situated 14 km from Motsuji Temple, Matakitai offers 1-star accommodation in Ichinoseki and has a garden. This guest house features free private parking, a shared kitchen and free WiFi. The accommodation provides bicycle parking and a shared lounge for guests. I was the only guest for the night. Great common area for multiple people. There is a full kitchen for use and while it is a bit out of the way it was one of the best places i stayed on my trip.

This guest house provides free private parking, free shuttle service and free WiFi. Staff on-site can arrange a shuttle service. The hosts were very friendly and welcoming - there was also a breakfast included (which I didn't remember getting). The house was full of history and souvenirs which I'm sure the hosts are more than happy to talk to you about. There is also "sake nights" where the hosts offered us a chance to try different sakes. There is only one shower in the facility, so there is a booking system to reserve your shower slot.

Situated in Matsushima in the Miyagi region with Entsuin Temple nearby, Uchi Matsushima Guesthouse features accommodation with free private parking. Featuring a shared lounge, the 1-star guest house has air-conditioned rooms with free WiFi, each with a shared bathroom. Sendai Toshogu is 21 km away and Rakuten Seimei Park Miyagi is 22 km from the guest house. The owner is incredibly kind, and we really enjoyed our daily conversations with him before and after exploring Matsushima. The facilities were clean and pleasant, and the guest rooms are located on the first floor, while he and his wife live downstairs. The location was perfect, and the owner was very helpful with recommendations for places to eat, things to see, and other tips. A special thanks goes to him and his wife on our last day, when we had to be evacuated due to a tsunami warning. They took care of us and brought us to safety further inland. They made sure we stayed informed, drove us around to find food, and helped us find a place to sleep for the night. This experience truly reflects their warm hospitality. We will definitely be coming back the next time we are in Japan. (If you are into music i believe you will enjoy seeing his record collection) crazy 😁

Featuring a garden and a bar, Petit Resort Hotel Der Barte is located in Zao Onsen. The 3-star guest house features mountain views and is 600 metres from Zao Onsen Ski Resort. The guest house has family rooms. Fantastic location, right on Uwanodai slope - actual ski-in ski-out. Host was extremely friendly and helpful, the food in the restaurant was great and good value. Nice draught beer! Shower in room with a shared hot bath that could be booked for free. There's a ski/boot room in the basement that opens onto the slope. The decor is a bit dated but in a very charming way.

Set 24 km from Kamo Aquarium and 47 km from Shinjo Station, Shukubo Kanbayashi Katsukane is situated in Mount Haguro district of Tsuruoka. This guest house offers free private parking, luggage storage space and free WiFi. The hostesses are two very friendly, but strict women. The meal was excellent. It is directly next to the start to the Mount Haguro Climb.

Set 500 metres from Zao Onsen Ski Resort, Pension Puutaro offers 3-star accommodation in Zao Onsen and features a garden. Among the facilities of this property are a restaurant, luggage storage space and bicycle parking, along with free WiFi throughout the property. Everything very clean. Very large room for single or 2 persons, can probably fit a whole family. Keiko was super nice and helpful and had great suggestions for restaurants. There’s just a lot of attention to every detail overall. The toilets even had the highest quality toilet paper I’ve ever seen in Japan😀 The price in summer/off season was very fair. There is no AC but it should unusually not be needed. Even when it was 37 degree in Tokyo it was only 25 in Zao onsen.
