Esimesed andmed Lahemaal asuva Käsmu küla kohta pärinevad aastast 1453. Käsmu on tuntud "kaptenite küla" nime all. Siin töötas merekool ja pea igas peres oli oma kapten või tüürimees. Küla omapäraks olid valged kaptenimajad ja kõrged lipumastid. Küla on tuntud rohkete kultuurimälestiste poolest. Ajaloost annab hea ülevaate Käsmu Meremuuseum.
