Here In the heart of one of Cumbria’s most vibrant historic market towns we welcome you to Sandgate Chapel. Built in 1815, this Grade 2 listed former Methodist Church is now a delightful place to stay and enjoy all that Penrith and the surrounding landscape of the lakes and fells have to offer. As a listed building with distinctive original features it has been lovingly converted to ensure it retains its character whilst providing mod- ern amenities and relaxing comfort. Whether you are simply stopping off on your way to Scotland, a businessman needing a base or you’re spending some time exploring the area and its landmarks, you can choose from a selection of one and two bed studio apartments that offer quality, style and practicality. Within easy walking distance to all town amenities, you can decide to self-cater or enjoy the many
In the heart of Cumbria nestles the historic market town of Penrith, once known as ‘the red town’ due to the many sandstone buildings. Its rich history reflects not only its strategic position on the route to Scotland, but also its proximity to one of the coun- try’s finest areas of natural beauty that has inspired artists, writers and musicians alike for centuries. The imposing ruins of Penrith Castle are evidence of its past importance as a military based since Roman times, originally designed to protect the region from the frequent raids and short sieges that plagued this border region; later becoming the residence of the future and now infamous King Richard III. Other historic landmarks worth exploring in and around the town are the Musgrave Monument, St Andrew’s Church and its Giants Grave; and the Beacon Pike, where for centuries, fires have been lit to warn of impending danger and where from the top, you can enjoy views across Penrith to the Lake District fells, Solway Firth and the mountains of Scotland. The many alleyways and quaint courtyards are a result of the horses and carts used by farmers to carry their produce needing to get to the stables behind the various inns. Now they house numerous tempting independent and specialist shops, cafes, bars and restaurants welcoming visitors to enjoy what’s on offer. Penrith also sits on the edge of the Lake District, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a landscape that has nurtured some of our greatest artists from William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter to Alfred Wainwright. Penrith is also the perfect base for exploring the North Pennines, Hadrian’s Wall and the Eden Valley where you can access the famous steam train from Settle to Carlisle.
