allow plenty of time to really take it in and once you are 'cultured out' visit the nearby brewery - roughly opposite the abbey. You'll have earned a drink if you claimed all of those steps !
Very worthwhile visiting this incredible ruin. This location, if not this church, was very important in the early English Saxon times. The centre you go through before going to the actual ruin is very informative and, in itself, is an historical monument. You don’t need to go up the 199 steps if you can’t manage them just drive around the back up Green Land park at the top. Makes great photography.
Beautiful from the outside but my word it's expensive to enter - over £20 for 2 adults. But St Mary's Church is next door, free to visit and most informative. Plus the view over the harbour and out to sea is jawdropping.
Possibly the most iconic abbey ruin on the planet. Synonymous with Mary Shelley and all things Gothic, it’s position overlooking the harbour, connected via the famous 199 steps, is both beautiful and melancholic.
The staff were really helpful but the parking for the disabled and access to the entrance were not very well thought out for people with limited mobility. Having a metal hand rail in the hot sun was quite dangerous. The steps down from the carpark would be totally unsuitable for people in wheelchairs etc. I think you should have someone with disability experience when you were planning how people could access the event.
couldn't get in as we at the time wasn't with English heritage, we got there 15 mins before they closed after walking the 99 steps to be told it would cost 15 pound each, we only wanted a photo next to it, wasn't going to pay 30quid for 15 mins.
Whitby
Rural location but central to get to North Yorks Coast and the iconic Whitby Abbey. Greeted by a fawn on arrival and a barn owl the next morning. Our room, Meadowsweet, was spacious with everything you could need. The bed was comfy and we loved the home baked loaf of bread each morning that you can toast in your room with a great choice of jams and spreads plus yoghurt and fruit in your own fridge. Katy gave us ideas of where to visit and the info folder had lots of helpful tips too. Thanks for a lovely stay.
Whitby
The house was spacious, light, very clean, and modern. Full size fridge. Dishwasher. Washing machine. Heated towel racks. Quiet location. Parking for two cars on the driveway. Easy walking distance from the house to Whitby Abbey and Whitby town centre, using the Cleveland Way Coastal Path just a few minutes walk from the house. Jo, the manager was helpful, and we appreciated the thoughtful items she left to welcome us to the house.
Whitby
It was very quiet even though the location was close to the sea and the center. Very beautiful view of the sea and Whitby Abbey, the apartment very spacious and equipped with everything to make you feel at home. Very comfortable and clean. Communication with the host was excellent, we always received useful information and in a very short time. We hope to come back soon! Thank you Host@Stay- Fox' Hideout !
We had a lovely stay here! Emma and Antony are so welcoming and the room was lovely, with a very comfortable bed and a beautiful view of Whitby Abbey. Also loved that there were tea and coffee making facilities including a fridge stocked with fresh milk, orange juice and water. We'll definitely stay here again next time we go to Whitby.
Room had a great view of Whitby Abbey. The breakfast was very good with lots of choice. Staff were very welcoming and friendly. when we arrived we were early but we were able to leave our cases locked away safely. This helped because we were parked a little way from hotel. Great to get parking permit before check in time.
Very clean. Nice big comfortable bed. (Little 'arty' table at the end of the bed a bit unnecessary given it was a small room - moved it so did not walk into it during the night!). Nice view of Whitby Abbey in the distance. (Room 7). Not too far from the town centre and harbour.
Whitby
The cottage is set over looking a picturesque valley, with Whitby Abbey in the distance. Very tranquil and peaceful. Cottage was well appointed, everything we needed. Nice comfy bed. We enjoyed sitting out on the patio for breakfast.
