Situated in Gotsu, in a historic building, 13 km from Gotsu City General Citizen Center Milky Way Hall, Ryokan Nushiya is a ryokan with an open-air bath and garden. The ryokan is located in a geothermal area, with a number of hot springs nearby for guests to relax in. This was our fourth trip to Japan and we've stayed in many ryokans. This is one of our favorites. The space we stayed at was huge. It was a two-story stand alone building. The seats looked out onto the courtyard with a pond and a lot of trees, which was very peaceful. I'm usually not the type to stay in my hotel/ryokan all day, but this place tempted me to do so due to the serenity of the courtyard. There were two private onsen that were easy to access due to the small number of guests that stay here. The food was fabulous. While walking around one morning I found a hiking trail that led up to castle ruins. The next morning I hiked up to the ruins and down the other side and came out near the Moss Land.

Set just 24 km from Lake Shinji, Saginoyusou offers accommodation in Yasugi with access to an open-air bath, a garden, as well as luggage storage space. It is located 27 km from Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum and provides room service. The ryokan has parking on-site, a hot spring bath and a 24-hour front desk. We were so looked after from the moment we arrived to when we departed. We chose to stay here to have our last night in Japan to be in the most extraordinary setting and to have access to the Adachi Museum. The room was stunningly beautiful, comfortable and we loved the private onsen. The amenities provided were great too. All of our meals, dinner and breakfast, were a delight to the taste buds as well as visually pleasing.

Set 1.7 km from Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum, Onyado Nono Matsue Natural Hot Spring offers 4-star accommodation in Matsue and has a spa and wellness centre. Offering a restaurant, the property also has a bar, as well as a sauna and a hot spring bath. Private parking is available on site. It is a very new hotel. Located just 13-15 min walk from the train station, it was easy to reach even with suitcases. We were given a room in Japanese style but with Western beds. Note that sink is located in the room lobby, while toilet and shower are behind the door. Heated toilet seat was a great feature in winter. Onsens on the roof are to die for. 1 indoors, 1 big outdoors and 2 more big tubs with 39'c and 42'c water. Breakfast is a great value for money. Overall this stay was amazing and I really really want to come back again.

Located within 6 km of Masakigaoka Park and 6.1 km of Hamayama Park, Dormy Inn Izumo offers rooms in Izumo. This 3-star hotel offers a 24-hour front desk and luggage storage space. The accommodation provides a sauna, hot spring bath, restaurant and free WiFi throughout the property. It was close to Izumo station. The onsen spa area was wonderful. Extra amenities such as popsicles, yogurt and ramen and free washing machine made our trip easy and convenient. The rooms were spacious and also included pajamas and various toiletries. The staff were friendly and helpful. Easy to store luggage before or after checkout!

The property is set 1.4 km from Tsuwano Joushi, 37 km from Ikoji Sesshu Garden and 47 km from Yasaka Shrine. Featuring free WiFi throughout the property, the non-smoking hotel has a hot spring bath. Fantastic hotel in a lovely little town. Both the hotel, and Tsuwano itself, exceeded all expectations. I travel around slightly-off-the-beaten-track spots like this in Japan a lot and try to find charming little ryokans or minshukus that are value for money. Don't think I've ever found a better one than this. From the entrance it is clear you're entering a place that's punching above its weight. It looks much nicer than you'd expect for the price. Turned up early and the friendly staff were more than happy to let me check in early and make use of the facilities which include a very nice little rooftop bath (rotenburo) and - remarkably - free drinks, including whiskey and shochu, in the little area on the ground floor from 5pm. The hotel place was spotless (it looks very new) and the Japanese-style breakfast was very nice indeed. I'l definitely visit Tsuwano again one day, and I'll definitely stay here.
