Amazing guest house. Very kind and caring family running it. Has a lovely family atmosphere. I fell sick during my stay, getting admitted to hospital for 2 nights. They took care of me the whole time, bringing me 3 meals a day, everything else that I needed out of their own kindness. Cannot thank them enough. Food is amazing, tasty and huge portion sizes, you will never go hungry! Thankyou so much!

This guesthouse, run by a couple, is about 1 km from the bus station. After checking in, I learned they have two separate buildings with rooms. The newer one looks decent, but I stayed in the older one. It’s very basic and somewhat clean, but the room is quite dated. There’s no Wi-Fi, the room is warm and hot without air conditioning, and the shower only has cold water. The electric fan is noisy, and sometimes bugs come into the room from outside. They provide mosquito coils, though. For such a low price, this is probably what you get. The couple is friendly and kind, clearly good people. They even helped me receive my courier delivery.

I liked many things about Nuga Retreat. First of all, the beautiful, natural surroundings with mountain views created a unique atmosphere of peace and relaxation. The rooms were comfortable and well-equipped, providing convenience, and the outdoor pool was a great place to unwind. I also really appreciated the friendly and helpful staff who truly made an effort to ensure our stay was enjoyable.

We stayed for two nights – and it was simply amazing! High up in the Knuckles, right in the middle of nature, lies this beautiful chalet. It is very clean, perfectly sized, and offers breathtaking views. The whole property is tastefully designed and even has its own garden with vegetables and spices, from which fresh meals are prepared. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, making you feel welcome from the very beginning. We received valuable tips and had the chance to exchange thoughts about the surroundings and Sri Lanka in general. One absolute highlight of our stay was the High Knuckles Trek: we hiked for 5–6 hours through the mountains, saw stunning waterfalls, and even spotted a rare Leaf-nosed Lizard – an endemic reptile with a leaf-shaped nose, perfectly camouflaged in the forest. Another fascinating part of the trek was the constantly changing weather: sometimes sunny and clear, then suddenly misty and humid, which gave the landscape an almost mystical atmosphere. Our guide always took great care of us, ensured our safety, and impressed us with his deep knowledge about the flora, fauna, and the region. We are absolutely thrilled with this accommodation and can only highly recommend it – for everyone who wants to experience nature, adventure, and true Sri Lankan hospitality!

From the moment I arrived, I was impressed by the warm hospitality and peaceful atmosphere. The villa is perfectly located—very convenient to access the town and nearby tourist attractions. Whether you're exploring Mahiyanganaya's cultural sites or enjoying the natural beauty of the area, this place makes for an excellent base. The food was outstanding—fresh, flavorful, and truly a highlight of my stay! Every meal was prepared with great care, and I loved the variety of local dishes. The rooms were comfortable and well-maintained, offering a relaxing retreat after a day of exploring. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, making sure I had everything I needed. We stayed in one of the front rooms, and really enjoyed sitting on the balcony looking out at the mountains. Rawana provided amazing service, very attentive, we had Sri Lankan breakfasts lunches and dinners cooked by his wife which were so delicious- genuinely some of the best food we've had so far. Rawana also took us in his the Tuk Tuk to see the views of lakegala, guided us on a hike to diyakerella Ella falls, and drove us to the sliding rock swimming spot even though it was raining the whole time (4-5h)! Their 3yo son was also very sweet to hang out with. In terms of prices he charged us 10 000 for the Tuk Tuk and guide, and I think we paid 7-8000 for two dinners and a lunch for two. The rooms and shared bathroom were basic, clean and comfortable, the beds are a little hard, and there are no sealed windows (but we didn't have any issues with bugs) but none of that is a problem, it's in the middle of a jungle! Definitely recommend!
