This hotel has rooms all around a central court yard. The restaurant is in the court yard and there are beautiful plants which attract birds and give an overall look of freshness. The restaurant has powerful fans which help with the heat. Our room had an aircon, which is rare for Villavieja and Tatacoa. The beds were comfortable and although there is only cold water, it was no problem because of the heat in this area. The breakfast consisted of fruit juice, toast and eggs made to order, and coffee. It was nice and more than enough. We had lunch once and dinner twice at the hotel's restaurant and the food was delicious. We also had very good cocktails. The restaurant is open all day till 10 pm. They also have an ice cream fridge where you can buy different delicious ice creams any time of day. The staff were very friendly and helpful and some of them do speak English. We asked them to arrange our transport from Neiva airport to the hotel and to arrange a tuk tuk and guide to take us to the Grey dessert and Red dessert the day after our arrival (our only full day in Villavieja). Yeison Medina waited for us at the airport when we arrived late on a Sunday night and transported us to the hotel. He also happened to be our guide for the dessert trips. He is a professional guide at the observatory as well and he was very knowledgeable about the geology, the history and the fauna and flora of the dessert. He spoke English well enough, he was very funny and full of jokes and we had a wonderful day with him. He was also a magician with a cell phone and took very creative photos of us in the dessert. We will remember him every time we look at our holiday photos. Hotel Villavieja is definitely the obvious choice if you plan to visit the Tatacoa dessert. Don't bother to find a tuk tuk on the square or anywhere else for dessert tours, just ask the hotel to arrange it for you and hope that Yeison Medina is your guide.

Where to start... this place is the highlight of our trip across colombia! The accommodation is beautiful, imagine waking up to a desert breeze, hearing horses gallop by, listening to the sounds of birds as you lay in bed. Breakfast was delicious and accompanied by humming birds next to the table in the trees. Dinner was one of the best beefsteaks I've ever had, the portion was generous and just utterly delicious. There's a spot to charge your electronics, a gang of friendly dogs, games, lots of places to chill, a pool and lots of flowers growing all around. It's paradise! The staff went out of their way to make our trip memorable and they are just fantastic. Seriously, you cannot get a better location and a better stay in the area than this place!!!!

Perfect ecological gem in the desert! Super friendly host, pool and cool beer in the desert, beautiful cabins with openair shower - and all this eco- and budget- friendly. Ask your tuktuk-driver that takes you to the hostel to stop at the desierto rojo (about 5km away from the hostel) for 1h so that you can take a walk through this stunning landscape (if you want you can ask him to guide you).

A Hidden Gem in the Desert! As a Parisian who travels extensively and tends to have high standards, I have to say: Estrella Casa del Angel is an absolute masterpiece in the middle of the Tatacoa Desert! From the moment we arrived, Lucila and her family welcomed us with warmth and care that made us feel like we were part of their home. Their kindness and attentiveness are unmatched – they truly go above and beyond to ensure every guest feels special. The property itself is stunning. The rustic yet elegant design perfectly complements the natural beauty of the desert. The pools (yes, plural!) are an oasis of relaxation, and floating in the cool water while surrounded by endless desert landscapes is an experience I’ll never forget. This is the perfect spot to disconnect from the chaos of everyday life. No distractions, just peace, tranquility, and the magic of the desert. The attention to detail, from the pristine cleanliness of the rooms to the thoughtful amenities, speaks volumes about the love and care Lucila and her family pour into this place. If you’re looking for a unique, soul-soothing getaway with a touch of magic, Estrella Casa del Angel is it. Lucila and her family have created a haven that will exceed your expectations – and that’s coming from someone who’s pretty hard to impress! Thank you, Lucila, for making our stay unforgettable. We’ll be back, and next time, we’re bringing friends!

As long as you stay away from the town centre, you avoid the constant desert tour touts, but you can't blame people for making a living. Felt totally safe wandering around alone at night, you can swim in the river and the desert is amazing. Could have stayed 2 nights instead of one but had a plane to catch

We stayed here to visit the Tatacoa desert - well worth the trip - it does take a bit of an effort to get here - we stayed here 2 nights and could have stayed another day to enjoy the pool - one day in the desert was enough for us .

I had 3 nights/2 days here and you woukdn't any more.

I had 3 nights/2 days here and you woukdn't any more. I had to work one day and did a 12-hour trip the other. The village is interesting in seeing small town life but there's not much reason to hang around and things close early in the evening. The trip 9am-9pm had around 15 participants in two vehicles with one guide. There was a short trip on the river, a brief walk to see insects, catci etc, hours in the grey visit (with a slightly challenging walk), lunch, time as the swimming pool in the desert, the red desert for sunet and the observatory (worth it) - it was COP150k The hotel told me how much it would cost in tuktuks etc but having come back from the observatory, it was quite a long way. To do it on your own, I think it would be better to say in the desert otherwise from Villavieja, this trip is a good way of fitting it all in. There was another trip options of half day, 2hrs in each desert with a spanish speaking guide but that was also COP150k and you wouldn't experience enough but it's an option for those with less time
