- From $136 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 7.9Good - What previous guests thought, 2,367 reviewsBerghotel is located at the top of a small mountain in a heavily forested area. It is a 15 minute walk up a hill from the main tiny Friedrichroda Train Station up a winding road that passes the town cemetery. Or at the prior stop northwest of the hotel at the bottom of a ravine is the Reinhardsbrunn-Friedrichroda tiny Train Station (more like a train stop but the S-Bahn #4 and several city buses also leave from near there), and it's a 15 minute walk starting up a dirt road to get to the Berghotel. There is also a bus that runs up to the Berghotel, but it comes only a few times a day. The staff in the hotel were excellent and there was always one at the reception desk or the visitors aid desk who spoke excellent English. The room was clean and spacious enough, and my window faced northwest overlooking the forest from which small deer would sometimes emerge to chew on the grass or other herbaceous vegetation when it was dark. This is a very large hotel with the capacity for hundreds, and from the outside looks like something very blockish from the East German era. The dining area is huge, and the morning breakfasts are well supplied. The S4 tram (every 30 minutes) at the Reinhardsbrunn-Friedrichroda stop takes you to Gotha Train Station in about 40 minutes at first wandering through the forest and then through farmland and past little villages. If flying into Frankfurt, this would be a better choice to get to Friedrichroda with just the change onto the S4 (separate ticket, Euro 3.90) than the Deutsche Bahn choice of two changes (in Eisenach and then Frottstadt). With my 6 night stay at the hotel, they also gave me a "Thuringer Wald Card" that entitles the traveller to get on just about any bus/train/tram that is in Friedrichroda, including the S4 which as mentioned goes to Gotha (which itself is well worth a visit).Guest review byTomCanada

Erfurt is an attractive city that is great for wandering around, but also with some interesting cultural attractions to visit. It's also well connected by train to other places (e.g. Weimar, Jena, Gotha, Eisenach), making it an ideal base for exploring the area.Guest review byHelenUnited Kingdom - 10.0

It is a place to get to know J.W.v.Goethe and the time he lived in, especially in his residence, the attached museum and the Garden House which is located in the beautiful park along the river Ilm. The Bee Museum is worth to visit. Here you also can eat an deliciously prepared meal and home made cakes and ice cream.Guest review bySteffelbauer - 10.0
Our daughter lives in Jena with her young family.
Our daughter lives in Jena with her young family. This unit is not as convenient to her as others we have used but was one of the biggest and had a full common kitchen to use. We have not seen too much of Jena except the old city and the Bergau Park Mall. Both are nice and different than in the States. Would like to see the Planetarium or go to the top of the Jen tower. We found the bedroom cold in December when we arrived and the common areas cold all the time. There is a large common-use dining table but it is so cold in the area you wouldn't want to sit out there. Nice quiet area but very limited, unreserved parking. We had to park about 5 blocks away and walk back. There is a very complete grocery store called Netto just across the street that had fresh baked croissants in the morning. That was great!Guest review byRichard - 10.0
Eisenach, a charming city in Thuringia, Germany, is a gem...
Eisenach, a charming city in Thuringia, Germany, is a gem for history, culture, and nature lovers. Best known as the birthplace of composer Johann Sebastian Bach, the city boasts the Bach House Museum, where visitors can explore his life and music. Eisenach is also famous for Wartburg Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site where Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German—an essential stop for history enthusiasts. The city’s old town is picturesque, with half-timbered houses, cozy cafés, and quaint streets perfect for strolling. Nature lovers will appreciate Eisenach’s location at the edge of the Thuringian Forest, offering scenic hiking and cycling trails, including sections of the Rennsteig, one of Germany’s most famous hiking routes. Eisenach’s rich cultural calendar, from classical concerts to local festivals, adds to its vibrant atmosphere. The city is also compact and walkable, making it easy to explore in a relaxed way. What makes Eisenach special is its unique blend of historical significance, musical heritage, and natural beauty. Whether you’re drawn by Bach’s melodies, Luther’s legacy, or the surrounding green hills, Eisenach offers a rewarding and memorable experience—making it a fantastic destination for travelers seeking both culture and nature.Guest review byDaniUnited States - 10.0

I remained in Old Town since I was researching my grandfather's story and needed access to archives, the library, Palace and other historical locations and resources. There is so much rich history here and many of the buildings have plaques on them with historical details about the building. There was a decent variety and number of restaurants to choose from in Old Town, it felt very safe and people were very friendly.Guest review byChristineUnited States - 10.0

If you love winter sports, in particular biathlon then Oberhof is the place for you. Also it's ideal for hiking and cycling especially along the Rennsteig. Ideally is best to have a car. The location of the Obere Schweizerhütte was right next to the bobsleigh, luge and skeleton runs. The cable car to the top was amazing and once at the top you're at the biathlon stadium. You xan also have a shooting experience.Guest review byXimenaUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Beautiful city to visit if you enjoy long walks in nature (just be prepared for the wind 😁). With breathtaking landscapes and a beautiful city center, it is also extremely easy to travel to nearby cities and enjoy the wonders that the Thuringia region has to offer.Guest review byDquesadoPortugal - 8.0
Beautiful old cathedral; large old town.
Beautiful old cathedral; large old town. Lots of potential side-trips by rail to places like Eisenach, Gotha, Weimar, Wittenberg, Arnstadt, Leipzig, the Wartburg castle; these places are associated with important historical figures: Martin Luther, J S Bach and Johann von Goethe.Guest review byChris in PolandUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Weimar remains in many ways the cultural centre of Germany.
Weimar remains in many ways the cultural centre of Germany. It was the home of the literary giants Goethe and Schiller, and Johann Sebastian Bach and Richard Wagner also based themselves there for a while. The architecture of the old city is delightful but Weimar is also where the modernist Bauhaus movement began in the early 20th Century. The relatively new Bauhaus Museum is a must for anyone interested in the beginnings of modern design and arhitecture. In short, there is something for everyone in Weimar, not least its fine range of shops, boutiques and restaurants. English is widely spoken.Guest review byKeithUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Not a well known travel destination, but with family here I was able to experience a German city without a large tourist influence. It was an enjoyable visit with plenty to do over a week’s stay. Transportation always available and easy. I found the people very friendly. There were many excellent bakeries and coffee shops.Guest review byBruceUnited States
