FAQs about hotels in Galicia

Historic and Holy

A region of lush landscapes, countless coves and beautiful beaches, Galicia is the westernmost part of Spain. Long admired, it boasts incredible reminders of its first settlers – the Romans.

Lugo is the world’s only city entirely surrounded by Roman walls, and quite a sight they are. On a rocky promontory in A Coruña, the Tower of Hercules is a working Roman lighthouse. Considered the world’s oldest, it overlooks one of the region’s ‘rias altas’ – coastal inlets flanked by high cliffs.

Sheltered in another inlet is the port of Ferrol, and Viveiro around the coast has a lovely beach nestled below green hills. Another sandy beach protected by zig-zag cliffs is Ribadeo, on the Asturias border.

The most famous Galicia attraction is the capital Santiago de Compostela whose huge cathedral, firmly on the pilgrim route, is Christianity’s 3rd most important. Unsurprisingly, the city has the most 5-star Galicia hotels on Booking.com, though it’s smaller than Vigo which has a replica of the ship that reported America’s discovery.

The castle in nearby Baiona overlooks a beach, and Pontevedra slopes down to the sea. The undulating coastline continues to O Grove, known for beautiful beaches and hot springs. Thermal waters are also in Ourense, near the stunning Sil River Canyon in the hilly interior, home to most small hotels in Galicia.

The cabins are well designed. The place is comfortable and clean. The hosts are lovely and very accommodating. Dinner was excellent, home made. We ordered salad, fried calamari and grilled fish. Dessert was devine. Unfortunately, we were not able to eat breakfast at the cabin. We wanted to resume our pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela early and breakfast is offered by 9:00am. I highly recommend the place.

I went back to San Francisco Hotel Monumento in Santiago-just finished my second Camino, crashed there three nights. Spot on for pilgrims: five minutes from the cathedral, but tucked in silence, no Plaza square racket. Walls feel ancient, like ghosts of old monks approving your blisters. First visit two years back? Huge room, plush bed, every plug and hair-dryer you need. This round, they stuck me in a shoebox-shower's leaky, tiles chipped, but hey, sleep was fine. Still worth it for the vibe!

A Coruna was perfect for a 4 night holiday. We enjoyed exploring the town and coast by foot from our appartment on 2 days. On our third day we took the train to Santiago de Compostela for a very worthwhile day-trip. The cathedral there is stunning. There were plenty of bars and restaurants within easy walking distance from our appartment.

Pretty city with lovely river walks and the old town was gorgeous. Beautiful churches and basilicas which were free to visit. The restaurants were excellent and a wide range of cuisines. It was a bit hectic driving around town and parking on the street was difficult. However, there were many inexpensive carparks available. The people were friendly and learning a little Spanish before visiting this region, will go a long way.

I was pleased with my time in Arzua. I was tired. It was a long hard walk with a 40 lb pack on my back, so reaching Arzua and having a clean comfortable bed with a private bathroom and the promise of a hearty breakfast the next morning was a bonus. Also I learned that I could have someone courier my back pack to my next destination was a very welcome piece of news.

O Pedrouzo is a small town on the way to El Camino De Compostela. We only needed to stay one night and that was enough. I'm not sure if there were much to do in town. We tried two restaurants El Bule and Galaicos that serve traditional Galician food. Prices were fair and food was good.

The lodging is very new and quite easy to stay in. The beds were comfortable, it was a safe area. The kitchen was decent, the air conditioning worked well (important during this stay as it was hot in CdR). It seemed to be quiet so getting a good nights rest was easy. There are dining amenities very close and there is also a produce market if you are inclined to make your own food! The wifi was a little dodgy at times. We used the washing machine and the clothes drying rack which made our stay there very productive.

The town was very quiet when we visited on a Sunday with few people around and most restaurants were closed. We ended up eating at a tourist place where the waiter was more interested in finishing his shift. We visited a Roman House of Mosaics museum which actually gave very little information and the mosaics were not very easy to see. The Roman exhibition and museum by the Porta Mina was far more interesting - I'd recommend visiting that one first. The cathedral was not at all welcoming at a cost of EUR 8, photography forbidden and the cathedral museum was very poorly presented. The Roman walls are quite astonishing and will take a good 30-40 mins to walk around. Be aware this town is built on a steep hillside.

We just spent one night in Padron and were fortunate to be there during the Pascua de Padron. Aside from the must-see sights, we were also able to immerse ourselves with the Padron townsfolk during the festive celebration of the Pascua de Padron. Must see sights are the Convento del Carmen which will give one a good hilltop view of Padron. Should also visit the Iglesia de Santiago where you will find the "Pedron" or mooring stone, believed to be stone where the boat carrying the remains of St James (Santiago) was tied to.
