The view on the sea is amazing and the rooms are really comfortable. They serve food all day which is really nice and there is a water container so you don't have to worry about getting water. The staff was nice and helped us with diving, snorkelling and the transfer back to Makassar.

I've stayed there for ten days. The room met all western standards. The staff from the front desk to the man cleaning my room and the staff at the restaurant. The pool is fresh and nice, there is a sauna. The breakfast has an amazing choice. Croissants and many Indonesian dishes... Highly recommended. Close to shopping malls. Easy to find a cab. Great view from the room.

The streets are busy, footpaths unsafe, open drains are unhealthy and smelly. We were there for business + 3 days of rest. Hotel was amazing, staff fantastic and helpful just the streets let us down. It is certainly not a tourist spot. Nowhere to shop. the 99 dome Mosque was the most beautiful structure to be seen and of course the magnificent new Hospital the Kemekes Hospital with it's new 4 towers and ultimate spacical features.

So much to see not only in the Manado area but also islands, beaches and villages in the hills. Spent a total of 10 days there and so many more attractions I want to visit. Food options are great though quite a few eateries do not have aircon, so be prepared for that. Transport is easy and affordable. Wide range of accommodation options to suit budget. Would suggest out of main city centre not a bad idea because rates drop but quality is high. People very friendly.

Villa Queen’s made our Bunaken trip extraordinary.

Villa Queen’s made our Bunaken trip extraordinary. Though we stayed in the Homestay, it felt like a four-star resort thanks to cozy memory foam beds, air conditioning, and a stylish bathroom. Power and internet never failed, which was impressive given the island’s frequent outages—Starlink made working online effortless. We loved having access to multiple pools, a gym, and special experiences like carving lessons. Excursions took us from dolphin tours to cultural sites, and the diving team helped both beginners and certified divers feel at ease in the water. The food blew us away—fresh, flavorful, and farm-to-table quality. It’s the perfect mix of comfort, adventure, and authentic local flavor.

The people were always very friendly and anxious to help. There are many tourists things to do, but it is not popular tourist destination. It depends a lot on what you want and what you expect. My stay was limited I was not do my favorite thing (wandering around the the city and visiting coffee shops and restaurants and meeting and interacting with the local people) because I caught a cold.

    Bustling city!

Bustling city! We found it easy to get around by tuk-tuk (motorized rickshaw - ask your hotel for recommended prices and negotiate with the driver before you get started) or just walking. There is a variety of food options - and the seafood choices were wonderful - fresh and cooked to order. Our favorite restaurant Lae Lae was right across the street from our hotel. We enjoyed wandering around the city for a couple of days, usually retiring to our hotel during the heat of the afternoons, and then venturing out again as the sun was heading down. There are modern malls and local pasars (marketplaces) to explore as well as coffee shops or multitudes of local small or large restaurants to choose from. Indonesian food can be quite spicy, which my husband enjoys, but there are always low-spice options. We also rented a car and driver to go out of town to Ramang-Ramang - a village about an hour and a half out of Makassar. We took a boat ride through the mangrove forests and enjoyed the peaceful Karst rock formations that are special for that area. We then continued on to a local park - the Karst formations looked like sculptures, and climbed up a long walkway to see ancient cliff paintings. I couldn't actually make the final clamber up into the cave, but my husband did and could see the ancient form of a hand on a rock. Overall lovely outing into the countryside. We enjoyed our time in Makassar and highly recommend it as a friendly place to discover that there is more to Indonesia than Bali!

Manado is a vibrant and tourist oriented city.

Manado is a vibrant and tourist oriented city. The good options are excellent with a wonderful de variety of restaurants with culturally diverse cuisine. The local restaurants along the ocean foreshore are very cheap but the food is amazing and the connection with locals adds to the experience. Great exchange rates on Aussie dollar. When looking at tourist places to see don’t just stay in Manado city go out to places like Tomahon and Tondano the scenery up in those places is exceptional.

Our stay at Villa Queen’s in Bunaken was unforgettable.

Our stay at Villa Queen’s in Bunaken was unforgettable. Even in the Homestay section, the comfort felt luxurious, with memory foam beds, personal fans, air conditioning, and a well-designed bathroom. Despite frequent island-wide power outages, we always had electricity and fast Starlink internet—ideal for remote work. Guests enjoy access to three pools, a gym, and even unique activities like wood carving with the resident artist. We explored the region through guided tours, dolphin watching, and sunset cruises, while diving options ranged from PADI certifications to beginner-friendly pool sessions. The food, sourced from their own farm hotel, was simply outstanding. Villa Queen’s combines comfort, adventure, and world-class hospitality in one remarkable experience.
