Akranes is a pleasant community within east driving distance...
Akranes is a pleasant community within east driving distance to Reykjavik. Accommodations there are less expensive compared to the surrounding are but also are not as updated. There was one good sit-down restaurant in the town. The public swimming pool was nice and there a public geothermal baths on the beach there. When the fish factory opens, whole portions of the town stink of fish. If you are looking for more affordable accommodation for a one night stop, this town is a good option, but there is not much to see and do in the town itself.Guest review byCassieUnited States - 10.0

Akranes is one of our favorite day trips from Reykjavík.
Akranes is one of our favorite day trips from Reykjavík. We usually take the bus out and back, although I could see it being a great longer stop for non-locals too. It is much quieter with far less tourist traffic than other towns around Iceland. The lighthouse is a delight. It is open to the public most days and has amazing acoustics. The lighthouse keeper invites folks to sing or play instruments and will happily accommodate musicians who want to record there! There are also wonderful beaches and a public pool by the ocean. The museum is also lovely. We walk the town for the trip, but I could see a car being useful as well.Guest review byJenn
