We heard about Lucca from some people when we were in a restaurant in Pisa. We decided to visit because of their enthusiasm and because it was not very far by train. We were very impressed by Lucca's attractions and the local were friendly and helpful. There are areas other than the old town with it's usual tourists traps that are worth exploring.Guest review byMartin0007United Kingdom - 10.0

The great thing about Altopascio is that it is close enough to be able to do many day trips. Within an hour from Altopascio you can get to Cinque Terre (La Spezia specifically), you can go to Pisa, Florence and even San Gimignano, a beautiful borgo townGuest review byRogerCanada - 10.0

Gorgeous hilltop village with great restaurants and a castle that you can visit with amazing views. We loved the fact that it wasn't too touristy and our trip coincided with the annual wine festival with lots of stalls and live music which we enjoyed.Guest review byEmmaUnited Kingdom - 10.0

We flew into Pisa, but choses to stay in Lucca because of the parkrun on Saturday morning. Then we set about finding out what Lucca had to offer, and it was a lot! Beautiful walled city, where every street is pretty and a joy to walk along. Lots of cafes, restaurants, ice cream places and other shops. The walk along the wall was pleasant and had great views of the city and the Tuscan hills. Very clean, welcoming and friendly place to visit and not afflicted by the over-touristism in neighbouring Florence and Pisa.Guest review byLindaUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Very peaceful to look at the mountains while enjoying your morning coffee. Leave more time for communting to the property every day from where ever you visit, it is a small, winding road, a tunnell and not fun to do at night or after a glass of wine. I will look to stay closer to Pisa next time.Guest review byKristenUnited States - 8.0

It was quite special to stay in an ancient fortification stemming from the 1400's. The heir to this property gave us good historic background on the property. The unit is reasonable in size and was a comfortable size for 4 people although we were 6. The sleeper couch was not comfortable. The kitchen was very nice but it was not equipped to the standard of a true self catering unit. For the rest everything was just fine and we would advise anybody to come and stay here when visiting the area. The main bedroom bed was nice. The 2nd bedroom only had half walls. The little town is quaint and beautiful and worthwhile visitingGuest review byM GSouth Africa - 10.0
Warm & Beautiful city People very proud of their heritage
Warm & Beautiful city People very proud of their heritage many restaurants in the wall but please note very little variety they cater to authentic Italian cuisine from Pizzas Pasteries & micheline star Restaurants example GELORTI, TRATTORIA DE NONNAS & MECENATE just to name a few FOR THESE 3 PRICES REASONABLE Great place to make a base to see the region by train 30 minutes to Pisa 1 hrs 30 minutes to Florence 2hrs..>Genoa& Cinque terre> 1 1/2 hrsGuest review byMarkofskyCanada - 8.0

Montecarlo is an excellent village on a hilltop close to Lucca. The village is very lively in the evening, with many restaurants and bars. Unfortunately, like in many other locations where demand exceeds supply, we had some negative experiences with restaurant owners who were rude and not flexible with tourists. Fortunately, those were a few exceptions, while most restaurants were friendly and gentle.Guest review byRiccardoItaly
