FAQs about hotels in Umbria
Hilltop Towns Ringing with Music
One of Italy’s smallest regions, fabulous Umbria has stunning hilltop towns, rolling vineyards and magnificent architecture to rival its more famous neighbour Tuscany.
The capital Perugia is a university town whose cobbled centre houses medieval art, steep streets and shops selling locally made chocolate. It also hosts a jazz festival, while the annual Festival of the Two Worlds is in Spoleto, a town with a hilltop castle and well-preserved Roman theatre.
Remains of a Roman theatre are also in walled Gubbio, one of Italy’s best-preserved medieval towns. North-east, Città di Castello has excellent galleries and a church visible for miles around. The same is true of the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, dedicated to the saint who lived in poverty. Ironically, this hillside town has one of the few 5-star Umbria hotels.
Foligno has a peaceful river and further south Terni is near the multi-level Marmore waterfalls. Orvieto on a sheer escarpment to the north-west houses the jewel in the Umbrian crown – a fantastic cathedral with a gold-mosaic façade.
To the north, jutting into Lake Trasimeno on a piece of land that was once an island, is Castiglione del Lago. In the east, tranquil Norcia in the foothills of the Monti Sibillini National Park houses some of the many Umbria hotels in the countryside on Booking.com.

- From US$112.71 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Superb - What previous guests thought, 512 reviewsThe location is exceptional with great view This is a proper Agriturismo, something extremely difficult to find in Italy. They do really serve you the food they produce and they are proud of it and rightly so The restaurant offer you a real taste of Italian local (Umbria) food no if no but. All food it is superb but, in case you'll find it on the menu just ask for "Coratella" (starter) alongside one of their grilled dish (main) Their olive oil is what a farmer would call olive oil, forget the shelf filled with bottles having some green liquid inside. Once you have tried their olive oil you'll understand what you had so far was far from being olive oil The staff (owner included, Alessandro) are there to make you enjoy your stay and ready to help you out. Having worked as a waiter I can ensure their service it is well above excellent. The pool is clean, and they also have a small bar there where you can get a drink without running to the restaurant and offer the possibility of enjoy a superb beer they produce. Also, in case you like ice cream yogurt then you are in the right place to get the best I have ever had All the family enjoyed the stay, dog included! When we left we could not go if not by taking with us some of their olive oil, their soap and a good selection of their jamGuest review byFabioItaly
- From US$183.15 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.4Superb - What previous guests thought, 142 reviewsAbsolutely exceptional stay at Tenuta San Masseo – an unforgettable experience from start to finish. The accommodation is nothing short of spectacular – elegant, beautifully maintained, and designed with both comfort and style in mind. The views of Assisi are simply breathtaking – waking up to the majestic sight of the Basilica and the rolling Umbrian hills felt like a dream. What truly set our stay apart was the peace and tranquility of the property. It’s the perfect escape to unwind and recharge. Every corner of the estate is serene, thoughtfully curated, and radiates a sense of calm. But what made our experience truly outstanding was the incredible team at Tenuta. Every single person went above and beyond to ensure our stay was perfect – warm, attentive, and genuinely passionate about creating a memorable guest experience. We felt truly cared for. We cannot recommend Tenuta San Masseo enough – a hidden gem that we can’t wait to return to. Five stars and then some!Guest review byRobertaUnited Kingdom
- From US$573.41 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.3Superb - What previous guests thought, 419 reviewsThe rooms were fairly small but clean, cozy, and extremely comfortable. The spa facilities were excellent, especially the heated indoor-outdoor pool, though the massages were quite average compared to other spa resorts we've visited. The food and wine selection at the resort were outstanding, and the views across the property were truly impressive. I would definitely return if I ever visit that area of Italy again. Also remember to call the resort before booking as some rooms are far from the property and some are inside the property.Guest review byDilsher SinghIndia
- From US$170.12 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 7.8Good - What previous guests thought, 917 reviewsLocation is perfect. Facilities clean and beautiful. The staff were lovely. When we arrived we discovered we had no electricity (no aircon) in our room. They kindly offered us a new room which ended up as an upgrade. This was so greatly appreciated as we had just finished our first day driving on the opposite side and our hire car overheating, we were exhausted. We stayed 6 nights, breakfast was delicious, Pool was clean with amazing views and room was comfortable.Guest review byJodiAustralia
- From US$284.12 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 698 reviewsBeautiful location, wonderful house. The pool is very nice and the salt water is a pleasant change from the chlorine ones. It has also got a nice spa although we didn’t use it. The rooms have a rustic, elegant feel which really fits in the area. Not too far to pretty towns like Cortona. The food at the property is delightful with excellent wine pairings. Complete rejuvenation.Guest review byCoenraadQatar

I went to Assisi to visit the tomb of Saint Carlo Acutis and it was such an emotional experience! I had no idea there were so many hills in Assisi. I would have packed much differently and had a much smaller suitcase. The people that I met were very friendly and helpful to me. My suitcases were entirely too heavy and so many people provided me with assistance!Guest review byJudithUnited States - 10.0

The city is wonderful but you will need a car to get around some of the sattelite towns such as Montefalco or Todi. Other towns like Assisi and Foligno are accessable by train. You will need to pre book wine tours out of town.Guest review bySteveNew Zealand - 10.0

The quintessential Italian village -- so much history with beautiful cobblestone streets, amazing cafes and quaint shops. Terni is a wonderful city.
Terni is a wonderful city. In my opinion it's a hidden gem of Italy. It's an easy 1-hour train ride from Rome, and on the way to all the northern Italian cities. Terni Centro has almost no cars, so incredibly walking friendly, full of cafes, gelaterias, and pizza. All, with picture book old Italian architecture. Also, Terni really comes alive after 4pm!Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

Passignano sul Trasimeno is a charming lakeside town in Umbria offering breathtaking views, authentic Italian culture, and a peaceful atmosphere away from tourist crowds. With its medieval fortress, waterfront promenade, excellent local cuisine, and perfect location for exploring the Umbrian countryside, it's an ideal destination for travelers seeking a genuine Italian experience and great tradition like Palio Delle Barche.Guest review byGrzegorzPoland - 10.0
We stayed one night.
We stayed one night. Julia, the hostess, was outstandingly helpful and she spoke very good English. The dinner and breakfast were particularly good. We ate dinner outdoors but in good shade from the evening sun. There is a large swimming pool which has a superb view. I highly recommend Romitorio agriturismo.Guest review byPaulUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Small and not overrun with lots of foreign tourists.
Small and not overrun with lots of foreign tourists. Station very convenient so easy to use as a base to visit Asissi, Spoleto and Perugia, yet plenty to see in Spello. A delightful little hill town. Hard walking up hill but downhill all the way home if accommodation was at the bottom end of the walled city.Guest review byBethAustralia
