FAQs about hotels in Umbria
Hilltop Towns Ringing with Music
One of Italy’s smallest regions, fabulous Umbria has stunning hilltop towns, rolling vineyards and magnificent architecture to rival its more famous neighbour Tuscany.
The capital Perugia is a university town whose cobbled centre houses medieval art, steep streets and shops selling locally made chocolate. It also hosts a jazz festival, while the annual Festival of the Two Worlds is in Spoleto, a town with a hilltop castle and well-preserved Roman theatre.
Remains of a Roman theatre are also in walled Gubbio, one of Italy’s best-preserved medieval towns. North-east, Città di Castello has excellent galleries and a church visible for miles around. The same is true of the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, dedicated to the saint who lived in poverty. Ironically, this hillside town has one of the few 5-star Umbria hotels.
Foligno has a peaceful river and further south Terni is near the multi-level Marmore waterfalls. Orvieto on a sheer escarpment to the north-west houses the jewel in the Umbrian crown – a fantastic cathedral with a gold-mosaic façade.
To the north, jutting into Lake Trasimeno on a piece of land that was once an island, is Castiglione del Lago. In the east, tranquil Norcia in the foothills of the Monti Sibillini National Park houses some of the many Umbria hotels in the countryside on Booking.com.

- From US$134.02 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 7.8Good - What previous guests thought, 920 reviewsLocation is perfect. Facilities clean and beautiful. The staff were lovely. When we arrived we discovered we had no electricity (no aircon) in our room. They kindly offered us a new room which ended up as an upgrade. This was so greatly appreciated as we had just finished our first day driving on the opposite side and our hire car overheating, we were exhausted. We stayed 6 nights, breakfast was delicious, Pool was clean with amazing views and room was comfortable.Guest review byJodiAustralia

Comfy beds, great wine, great people and dog friendly too! We were so impressed with the whole experience we have now decided to hold our wedding at Nikis next year!Guest review byEsme StewartColombia
- From US$270.37 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 694 reviewsBeautiful location, wonderful house. The pool is very nice and the salt water is a pleasant change from the chlorine ones. It has also got a nice spa although we didn’t use it. The rooms have a rustic, elegant feel which really fits in the area. Not too far to pretty towns like Cortona. The food at the property is delightful with excellent wine pairings. Complete rejuvenation.Guest review byCoenraadQatar

Great place for at least a 3 day stay.
Great place for at least a 3 day stay. There are cultural events, incredible churches and monuments to visit. Just walking around and discovering small streets and hidden secret places as you climb high to Santa Clara's Church and relish in the incredible view of the valley. Great places to eat, to shop special things and to sit somewhere for a coffee just relaxing, enjoying the views and just doing nothing.Guest review byLaura ScaroArgentina - 10

It’s a fantastic place to visit! So much to see! I went back up to the Casa Romana and the Teatro Romano and both were well worth the visit. La Rocca has incredible views and a very interesting museum. Then you can go down to the aqueduct, which is stunning.Guest review byAnneUnited Kingdom - 10

The quintessential Italian village -- so much history with beautiful cobblestone streets, amazing cafes and quaint shops. We were there for a family baptism and every venue accommodated our large groups with advance planning. Completely gracious and wonderful -- I will definitely return. It's a hidden gem.Guest review byAnonymous - 10
Terni is a wonderful city.
Terni is a wonderful city. In my opinion it's a hidden gem of Italy. It's an easy 1-hour train ride from Rome, and on the way to all the northern Italian cities. Terni Centro has almost no cars, so incredibly walking friendly, full of cafes, gelaterias, and pizza. All, with picture book old Italian architecture. Also, Terni really comes alive after 4pm!Guest review byAnonymous - 10

We stayed one night. Julia, the hostess, was outstandingly helpful and she spoke very good English. The dinner and breakfast were particularly good. We ate dinner outdoors but in good shade from the evening sun. There is a large swimming pool which has a superb view. I highly recommend Romitorio agriturismo.Guest review byPaulUnited Kingdom
