We loved Asahikawa, a very fun little city with a huge variety of bars and restaurants, easy access to local ski resorts, lots to see and do, and just a really fun, friendly vibe. Was a nice change after the hectic pace of Niseko. We will return next year and give ourselves a bit more time to have a really good look around (could do with 7 nights - our stay was 4 nights). Enjoyed the bonus of the winter festival being on during our stay, with spectacular ice sculptures the whole length of the main street, plus a big festival zone with activities, a huge ice stage, and dozens of food vans. We will be back for sure.Guest review byNicholasAustralia - 10.0
We've been twice to Furano.
We've been twice to Furano. It's a wonderfully friendly and relaxed resort. While it's not large by European or American standards, it features fabulously dry powder snow, and great restaurant options at the foot of the slopes and in the adjacent town. The fact that it is small also makes it easy to meet up with friends.Guest review byStephenAustralia - 10.0
I stayed in Sounkyo from 8-11th March 2024.
I stayed in Sounkyo from 8-11th March 2024. Sounkyo is a very picturesque small town. There are Sika deer that come into the town center to eat! The Sounkyo Gorge is impressive with mount Kurodake toweing over the Gorge. Take the Daisetsuzan Sōunkyō Kurodake Ropeway and on a good day you can see a 360 degree panorama of the Daisetuzan mountain range. There is a very good Visitors Center in Sounkyo with very friendly and helpful staff. One of the staff took me on a walk through the deep new powder snow which had fallen the night before. The lady took me just because she loved that area and was pleased I was interested in finding walks to explore. I would love to come here again in the summer and Autumn to see the changing seasons.Guest review byNeilThailand - 8.0

We would like to stay another day or two in Wakkanai the next time we go and visit. As it was we spent less than an hour in Cape Soya, which was basically our main objective, the northernmost point in Hokkaido. We enjoyed the park near the Gate of Ice and Snow as well as the observation tower. The view of the city from that vantage point was very nice.Guest review byLarryVPhilippines - 8.0

Travel books and blogs talk of Biei's famous Blue Pond, Shiragano Waterfalls, Takushinkan, various famous trees and observatories. But Biei is much more than that. It is a perfect scenic, serene getaway from busy city life. You don't actually need to plan and follow your itinerary to the point. Just roam around, whether on bicycles or in a rented car. Soak in the brisk air. Fumble into random cafes and restaurants. Biei is just so humble and modest, and yet very satisfying.Guest review byTaeksoonSouth Korea - 10.0

We were there on 3rd week of Sep 2023 but somehow perhaps due to climate change, the autumn leaves didn’t feature . So I would recommend 1st week of October to visit. Regardless the Asahidake Ropeway did offer great views and the Sugatame Pond trap walk was most enjoyable with good views.Guest review byGraceSingapore - 10.0
Nayoro was a pleasant, quiet town.
Nayoro was a pleasant, quiet town. I was only there for 2 full days and I definitely wish I had stayed longer! Cafe Now has excellent service and great cold refreshments for the heat. Sun Pillar Park Nissin was beautiful! The sunflowers were unfortunately not open, but the rest of the park is stunning too. The Brazil Bakery is a must visit too! It is closely located near the station and stocked with delicious Nayoro baked goods. The staff in all the stores were friendly and helpful. I had an amazing time!Guest review byAlexandra CloeteSouth Africa - 10.0

Stay in Kami-furano for fast access to the Tokachi Mountain Range in Daisetsuzan National Park, whether for hiking or for backcountry skiing or snowboarding. The town also has a good selection of restaurants; we only tried one during our stay, but it was excellent and reasonably priced.Guest review byCC NUnited States - 10.0
Loved the smaller village vibe.
Loved the smaller village vibe. As my second trip to japan i was intentionally trying to escape the tourist areas and english speakers / english content. Finally found it in Asahikawa. It's the size of city where you still have services not the best and presence of other languages really starts to fall off. The ice festival was clearly the main attraction here and i mis timed my stay not staying over the weekend when it really kicks off. The zoo is the other main attraction with very little english content and a fun penguin walk, though i had a very busy crowd when i went. There are a lot of museums though none, that interested me but it's not my cup of tea. So to each their own. The commercial street had tons of decoration for the festival which was super fun as well as an ice sculpting competition which i also missed 😅. Transport is well supplied in terms of access. Being a smaller town though, schedules start to be important to plan. You might get more chances around rush hour but outside of that you may end up waiting an hour if you miss that bus / train. I was only there a couple of days, but loved the vibe and ambiance. Much less touristy, less to do obviously, more rural and much closer to japanese culture. I crossed a fox, proof wildlife still exists in this town. Hopefully this doesn't frighten anyone, we live in a world with wildlife. Nothing made me happier than seeing this in the evening with beautiful fluffy falling snow. For me it's right up there as a highlight of my trip, right next to Niseko United for less than 20% of the price.Guest review byNicholasCanada
