Beautiful room in a converted merchant's house in Ozu. The upstairs sitting area is a lovely place to relax, as is the spacious bath on the ground floor. The decentralised hotel concept with properties spread across the town is unique and enjoyable. There are complimentary drinks and snacks available in the lounge, the breakfast is great and the staff provide an excellent service.

Great place to stay. Would 10/10 stay again. Rooms were spotlessly clean. Parking was right out in front of our room. The staff were great. Our electronic door code wouldn't work, was easily fixed with a manual key. The suprise was that they included a small meal with each room per person. It was a frozen meal. It was not much, however, after a few long days of travelling it was right what we needed!! Staff organised a taxi for us to the station on our last morning. Met us out the front of our room. The bed was very comfy, and the massage chair was a bonus!! Friendly cat visit on arrival was also nice!!

I am grateful to Tanaka san and Iseki san for their invaluable assistance in helping me to retrieve my lost item. They contacted the related department, explained my situation that I was unable to return and claim the item in person and arranged takkubin to send it to my last accommodation. I would rate Funaya an 11 if I could. I have stayed in some nice onsen ryokans before but this place is next level in every aspect. Everything about my stay here made me say "wow". The visual aesthetic and atmosphere of the building is super charming, a bit dated some might say but to me it just spoke to the long history of the place. The staff are friendly, helpful, and the service was impeccable. I found that their manner was a little more human than other high end ryokans I've stayed at where the staff can be a bit robotic sticking to their script all the time. Our room was massive, literally the biggest ryokan room I've ever seen. 12 tatami mats for the main room, another 8 off to the side in another room - plus the sitting alcove by the window, meditation/writing room, not to mention the bathroom with double sink, separate adjoining washroom with wooden Japanese bathtub, a separate toilet, and a substantial hallway linking it all up. Oh, that was just the "standard Japanese style room" too. We also had a nice little balcony with a view of the garden and the castle in the distance. The garden is a real highlight, beautiful, tranquil, there's even a foot bath. I really wish we'd been able to spend more time in it but it rained the day we were there. Meals were fantastic. Set kaiseki for dinner, which I don't normally like, but my partner and I just swapped things we didn't like and we were able to really enjoy it. Breakfast we had the choice of western or Japanese style - we had one of each and both were great. Nice not to have to deal with cold food at the buffet for a change. The actual baths are top notch, probably equal best I've used. Lots of space to wash, a couple of separate baths for soaking, and outdoor baths as well to cool off on the night air. Water temperature was perfect. We were able to leave our car with them for a bit after checking out to go for one last wander in Dogo.

The island has a very slow pace. Great for relaxing. We came here on a motorcycle/fishing trip. The motorcycle part was great. The fishing part…. was difficult😩 Lots of chinu (black bream) around and big, but they were not interested in the lures we used. Saw some locals catching them with bait, so we will have to change our strategy next time! Also, squid fishing is quite popular. One more thing, many restaurants only open for lunch or close/take last orders early so be prepared for this or you’ll be eating convenience store foods!🤣

Matsuyama is a city with a lot to offer. From the stunning views from Matsuyama castle, to the history of Dogo Onsen. It has many hidden gems in the form of cafes, traditional craft and cultural experiences and is a good jumping off point to see the rest of Ehime/Shikoku.

Great base for riding the Shimanami Kaido.

Great base for riding the Shimanami Kaido. We rode for 2 days returning by ferry, with our bikes, from Habu. The town and port are easy to get around and the tourist information at the train station was excellent. We stayed near the station where there was a great choice of restaurants. We hired a car in Imabari and did a quick 6 day tour around Shikoku. Great size city for a base in Shikoku.

The Best part about Matsuyama was where we stayed.

The Best part about Matsuyama was where we stayed. It was Ryokan Kominka Mitsuhama, and it was detailed by a true artist. You have 2 floors of space with the bedroom upstairs and a large living room downstairs. The living room is surrounded by 2 different mature and well lit Japanese gardens. One had many Koi swimming in the ponds. So lovely! It was in a quiet, low key neighborhood but just 2 blocks to the river and near a little working fisherman's bay. The boats were squid fisherman with lights strung on them because they fish at night with the lights to attract the squid. There were plenty of small local restaurants and bakeries. It was a respite from tourist crowds and off the beaten path.

When we booked we thought we were staying inImabari city. Because the address of Wakka is Imabari rather than Omishima island. So our only view of Imabari city was from train station and bus. Foreigners Need to know that you have to catch a bus to get from Imabari city to Wakka.
