The Earthquake Museum was, for me as a New Zealand, essential to visit...as we in the North Island had no real idea what the people were going thru. The videos etc show it clearly. The tram ride was relaxing and informative, you can go round as many times as you like in one day.

Queenstown was by far the busiest place we stayed at over our 2 weeks journey. Plenty of places to eat and things to do in the town and surrounding areas. We enjoyed the Saturday Market down by the lake and seeing local artisans display their work. just make sure you have a healthy budget to enjoy all the opportunities on offer.

A quaint town that is known for its dark skies -- it was a wonderful experience stargazing at night. During the day, the lake provides a wonderful backdrop for pictures and the area is rich in history. We also enjoyed the fish and chips by The Better Batter -- definitely a must try!

You will need a car in Dunedin.

You will need a car in Dunedin. We went to St Clair and then around to swim at Smails Beach. There were seals on the beach and almost no-one around. On Sunday we went to the market at the railway station. The Taieri Gorge Railway was excellent. Plenty of things to do in the area.

Milford is a must if you have come this far, do the cruise, plan for a 3 hour drive each way, so you can stop at Mirror lakes and all the viewpoints, its best when it's raining, but it's truly beautiful with a light bit of snow.

Nelson has a lot of speciality stores and a lot of food options. The Markets in the weekends are not for those looking for a bargain but do support local and NZ made and although some were costly, there was a lot of selection of goodies. Stoke the Bach Restaurant was staffed with lovely young girls, and the food was excellent and value for money The Arden Monaco where we stayed has limited room facilities and is not staffed outside of working hours, but the beds are comfortable and with very dark woodwork old paintings and very heavy doors, the facility was well equipped with heat pumps and hot water.

It was not the best time to visit what would normally be a lovely alpine village, due to a recent major storm event which felled a large number of trees. All the cycling and walking tracks in the forest were closed. We also had trouble with some driving, due to road closures not identified on websites. I enjoyed the thermal pools, despite it being wet at the time. The heating pools kept you warm and there was some shelter in the rain. I was glad to get a good discount on standard entry. It snowed whilst we were there, and it was very scenic seeing the big peaks snow covered in late October. We walked through light snow in the nearby Lewis Pass. We enjoyed some nice food in local cafes and assembled a healthier meal from a trip to the local 4 Square. I would like to come back when the tracks are reopened.

Didn’t do much in Twizel itself as it was for us just a stopover on a long roadie, and we had been in the area before. But there is heaps to do and see within a short drive. We had our own food with us so didn’t eat out. The camp kitchen was great.
