Wonderful, friendly, Karoo hospitality. Small boutique hotel in a small town in the Little Karoo. Fabulous food. Ostrich steaks. Selection of local wines and artisinal beers. Classic Movie nights. Showers and baths with lots of hot water. Good cooked breakfast. The decor is original from the time when the hotel was opened in 1950's. There are many art works by local artists. Location. The hotel is at the entrance to Meirings Poort on the Swartberg Circle Route. https://www.swartbergcircleroute.co.za/

The Art Hotel is an absolute highlight for Barrydale. A sensitively restored old building, a garden with a pool and very friendly staff. The restaurant alone is worth a stay. Thanks to Derek Lowe, the Chef!

We had a truly amazing stay at the Riverside Guest Lodge during our two-week vacation in South Africa! Albert and Elza are innkeepers that take great pride in the property and in what they do. This shows through 1000% in the experience guests receive when they book a stay. Prior to check-in, you receive information such as directions to the property, road conditions, and any diversion / closure warnings that are a huge help to the international traveller. The property itself is beautiful and well-placed, settled close to the main thoroughfare and up against a quaint little river. I really enjoyed lounging on the deck by the small pool and grabbing a couple of drinks from the well-stocked bar. The dining room was also very charming, even though we did not have time to enjoy breakfast. The guest room itself was also supremely comfortable and clean - a perfect resting place after a long day's drive and adventuring. Little touches like the bottle of water and chocolates, the honesty-system at the bar, and even the welcome 'tour' we got from Albert really made this place feel so welcoming and homely. Finally, the fact that they have solar panels setup means you barely, if ever, feel the effects of loadshedding -- a very very welcome benefit! Check-out was smooth and went off without a hitch. I was also pleasantly surprised that there was staff on hand that would give the cars a wash-down which we sorely needed after a few days of driving on gravel roads. I certainly would recommend this place to anyone visiting or passing through Oudtshoorn.

On arrival, we were greeted by overflowing sewers pouring out into the main road. Smelt so bad, we could not go near the liquor store near the main road. Apart from that issue, the rest of the town was great.

We should have called the farm manager from Barrydale, because when we arrived at the locked farm gate, we found there was no reception. We couldn't reach him, and it was soon getting dark, so we had to keep driving until we got signal again, which only took five minutes. Wann, the manager, was soon there and opened the gate to paradise for us... remote, behind two other farms, we were able to spend comfortable days in this Karoo resort. Wann was always available, and one evening his wife cooked us a delicious meal. A river, a hot tub, an ice bath, peace and quiet, and an endless sky—what more could you want? This is the place to be for anyone needing a break. For more romance, under the stars, bring candles and reading lamps.

Uniondale was the centre point of our journey distance wise - so convenient . Also we had not been there before so it made an interesting stop over. Scenery was stunning and the road excellent. Hotel built in 1832 (I understand). Uniondale is about 14 kms off main road and entry and exit are through two mountain passes which were most attractive.

From the main road it looks like just another dusty deserted Karoo town. What a pleasant surprise on turning off into the little town. We had a superb breakfast at @Stuff and met some interesting locals. The town is experiencing a resurgence and is intersting, well maintained and spotlessly clean.

Route 62 is a great drive and Barrydale is a convenient distance from Cape Town for a stop, The village is small but has interesting places to visit. Arrive in time to look round and leave the next by lunchtime the next day - that's all the time you need but it's worth taking time to stop and look round. We found it a friendly place and were not pestered by beggars.
