This was our first Ryokan experience. We picked it because of the reviews and it was as described. Not a modernised version but more traditional lending to the authenticity. Mieko-san is a great host, lovely, warm and most helpful. Also, her food is delicious! Would certainly recommend to those looking to stay in a Home-Ryokan.

I've stayed at a lot of ryokans in Japan (and a lot of hotels). This one might be my very favorite, though it's hard to have a favorite. I can say that it is so exceptional, I've been twice and will likely go again. It's not cheap! But you get so much for what you pay. It's not possible to stay anywhere else in the Kasuga woods and so if that kind of thing matters to you, then know that you go to sleep and wake up deep in these primordial woods. You might hear the flying squirrels at night--or see one at dinner, as we did. The air is clean and old and heavenly. The little ramps connecting rooms feel like something out of Heian Japan. The lighting is subtle, but still dramatic so you feel lifted into another world at night. Subtle things like the sound of falling water connect you to the elements. There is nothing over-processed here, or over stylized, as in modern hotels. If you prefer an "Andaz" or "Ritz Carlton" type of thing, then this is not for you. If you want something that feels utterly Japanese, then this is for you. The baths are both exquisite, as are the rooms. And the Kyoto style food was out of this world. Again, if you need a hamburger for dinner, then this place won't be for you either. But if you like exquisite, inventive, seasonal and utterly surprising Kaiseki food, that is still charming and inviting, then nothing is like Tsukihitei. And as a bonus, you are right by the foothills of a gorgeous mountain walk. Everything from the staff, to the snacks (which are plentiful) to the flower arrangements are beautifully chosen. Tsukihitei has also managed to maintain hallmarks of ryokan service (making your futon), without being intrusive. I've been in ryokan where the staff are constantly with you, and that is exhausting. That doesn't happen here. If you are looking for a pure Kansai and Japanese experience, I'm not sure where you will have a better stay.

Friendly staff in a clean and quiet ryokan style hotel right next to Naramachi, central Nara, and the park. The rooms were nice with a tatami area as well as a little reading space next to the windows overlooking the pond.

Extremely friendly staff, the kaiseki dinner was delicious with a lot of variety, same for the breakfast (opted for Japanese style). Everything was clean, the room was amazing, clean yukatas and haoris were provided daily, the futon beds were very comfortable. This Ryokan is very well located as it's very close to the Kintetsu-Nara train station (with direct trains to both Kyoto and Osaka) and the main streets while still in a very quiet area. Definitely recommend to anyone staying in Nara, either for just one night or for a few days!

Beautiful ryokan with English-speaking staff and a private-use onsen. Only a 10 minute walk from Kintetsu-Nara Station and close to Nara Park and located in a gorgeous part of town. Beds (futons) were very comfortable, free wifi, large room - I would stay here again if in Nara.

This place was exactly what I was looking for. A quiet ryokan with a private tattoo-friendly onsen. My room was big and the futon was very comfy. I appreciated the complimentary water and a kettle to make tea. Everything was so good, thank you! I will definitely come back.

The room was perfectly cleaned and was convenient and quiet, typical tatami floors and futon bed to sleep on. The area is quiet but very central and within walking distance to all major attractions. The staff was very helpful and polite and they accommodated all of my requests. The private onsen is amazing to have and I enjoyed it very much. Would highly recommend staying here!

My son and I loved this ryokan. We had previously paid $300 per night at a ryonkan of similar standard in Kyoto and this was almost as much value for a much lower price. The room was huge. The location was the best we'd had during our stay as it is right near the food market and main part of town. The staff were so lovely. The Onsen was wonderful although I recommend getting there soon after 5pm when it is filled as it cools down quickly. The futons and pillows were too hard for us but that is just personal preference.

The Ryokan is literally 1min walk from the station, in a peatonal street full of shops. The personal was very kind and they were always trying to help. They took care of our luggage before the check in and after the check out. The room was amazing with tatami floor and they left a yukata for each gest. The Onsen was amazing and very relaxing. The breakfast was incredible, everything in the menu was amazing and very tasty. 100% recommended

Lovely spacious tatami room, very comfortable futon. Room did have ensuite bathroom, but we enjoyed the nice big hot shared baths available, much like going to a sento. Yukata were provided too. Teas and senbei in the room were very welcoming.
